Stefan Daniel Patryk Liv (* December 21, 1980 as Patryk Śliż in Gdynia , Poland ; † September 7, 2011 in Tunoschna near Yaroslavl , Russia ) was a Swedish ice hockey goalkeeper , who during his active career, among others, at the HV71 in the Swedish Elitserien , the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League as well as HK Sibir Novosibirsk and Lokomotive Yaroslavl in the Continental Hockey League were under contract. He was adopted by a Swedish family when he was two years old.
Career
Stefan Liv started his career in 1999 at HV71 . After his first season, he was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the fourth round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft . In the 2000/01 season he was already the goalkeeper of HV 71. In 2002 he won the bronze medal at the World Cup and was awarded the Honkens trofé as the best goalkeeper in the Swedish Elitserien league in the same year .
In 2004 he became Swedish ice hockey champion and won the silver medal at the World Cup with the Swedish national team . In 2006 he won the gold medal with the Swedish team at the Winter Olympics and only a few months later he became world champion.
In the summer of 2006, he received a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings, but belongs primarily to the squad of the Grand Rapids Griffins , the farm team of the Red Wings in the AHL . On November 18, 2006, he was allowed to sit for the first time as a substitute goalkeeper at an NHL game on the bench, since regular goalkeeper Dominik Hašek paused and Chris Osgood was injured. He was not used in the NHL. He played 34 times for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the 2006/07 season .
In the summer of 2007 he returned to Sweden and signed a three-year contract with HV71. With the club he won the Swedish championship again and was awarded the guldpuck as the best player of the season . In 2010 he moved to the Russian HK Sibir Novosibirsk . In May 2011 Liv was signed by Lokomotive Yaroslavl . On September 7, 2011, he was killed in a plane crash near Yaroslavl .
