The Hyundai Genesis is a sedan of the upper middle class of the automaker Hyundai Motor Company . It was presented on January 8, 2008 in South Korea and is therefore the series version of a study of the same name presented in 2007.
The Hyundai Genesis Coupé is a coupé based on the sedan and is accordingly also assigned to the upper middle class. The production version was presented at the New York International Auto Show 2008 (March 21-30) after the Hyundai Genesis Coupé Concept study had already been shown in 2007 at several North American automobile shows, such as the LA Auto Show .
The Hyundai Genesis Prestige is a sedan based on the Hyundai Genesis that has been upgraded with better equipment , and a version with an extended wheelbase is still planned. The top engine is a five-liter V8 petrol engine. The Hyundai Genesis Prestige was sold again in the domestic market under the name Hyundai Equus from autumn 2009 and replaced the aging Equus.
The second generation of the Genesis was also sold in Germany between summer 2014 and spring 2017.
development
In March 2007 at the New York International Auto Show , the concept study "Genesis Concept" was presented. Hyundai said they had only compared themselves with the best of the best when developing the Genesis, naming the Lexus GS , the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class . In fact, the vehicle with numerous technical highlights, such as Hyundai's first self-developed 4.6-liter V8 - petrol engine , the first adaptive cruise control and the first bend lighting in a Hyundai a milestone in the history of the automobile manufacturer.
Development costs
The development costs for the Genesis amounted to around 600 million US dollars, according to Hyundai, which is roughly three times the development costs for the Hyundai Santa Fe second generation (CM; 190 million US dollars).

Engines
At market launch, the Genesis was available with two V6 petrol engines, while the V8 mentioned above was added to the model range in the course of 2008;
- 3.3 liter Lambda II V6 (known from Hyundai Santa Fe , Hyundai Sonata and Hyundai Grandeur ) with (model exclusive) 193 kW (262 PS )
- 3.8 liter Lambda II V6 (known from Hyundai Grandeur , Hyundai Veracruz , Hyundai Entourage ) with (model exclusive) 213 kW (290 PS)
- 4.6 liter Tau V8 (newly developed, not previously used in any other model) with (since 2010) 283 kW (385 PS)
Technical features compared to its predecessor
All gasoline engines have camshaft adjustment with variable valve timing , which reduces fuel consumption while increasing performance.
In addition, the Hyundai Genesis is the brand's first vehicle that will be available with the following features at least at an additional cost:
- Six-speed automatic Shiftronic 6-speed (3.3-l and 3.8-l six-cylinder: from Aisin Seiki , 4.6-l eight-cylinder: automatic from ZF ): greater comfort and lower consumption, as the The driver has more gear ratios available and can operate the engine at higher loads and lower speeds
- Adaptive cruise control Smart Cruise Control : The car automatically maintains (via radar) a specified distance from the vehicle in front
- Amplitude Selective Damping (ASD) (from Sachs ): Greater comfort and adaptation of the ground clearance at higher speeds to reduce air resistance
- Adaptive and static cornering lights : headlights help steer in the curve and thus illuminate the road better
- Rear-wheel drive and front engine instead of front engine and drive
- Electronically controlled active headrest : So far only available on some Mercedes-Benz , BMW and Lexus models; is a further development of the previous mechanical system and reduces the risk of whiplash injuries more effectively through shorter activation times
- Infotainment system from Harman / Becker Automotive Systems with central multimedia turn-push-slide actuator / controller (corresponds roughly to the iDrive from BMW, the MMI from Audi or the Comand from Mercedes) and combines various vehicle functions that are not necessary for operating the car are necessary in a central operating unit, which usually represents a controller as described above. In conjunction with a screen installed in or above the center console (on the Genesis fitted at the level of the dashboard), which enables navigation through the menus, the number of buttons is greatly reduced
- Adjustable shock absorbers : The driver can choose between three different driving modes (mostly comfort , normal , sport ) and in this way fine-tune the vehicle's settings (comfort, side tilt, agility ...)
- electric parking brake (EPB) from Küster ACS
safety
The following equipment features of the Hyundai Genesis, some of which have already been mentioned, improve active safety :
- ABS (anti-lock braking system): Prevents the wheels from locking when braking and thus maintains the vehicle's maneuverability
- ESC (Electronic Stability Program): evaluates the wheel revolutions of the individual wheels per unit of time and detects impending oversteer or understeer and counteracts these unstable driving conditions through targeted braking interventions on 1–3 wheels and throttling the engine power
- Cornering light : sensors recognize the amount of steering angle and the main headlights steer the curve electronically and better up to an angle of 15 °; Advantage: Less important areas outside the lane are no longer illuminated, important, previously unlit things such as wild animals on a country road are recognized earlier.
- SCC ( S mart C ruise C ontrol ; adaptive cruise control ): Approximately equivalent to the ACC of Mercedes-Benz ; the vehicle "detects" the distance to the vehicle in front using radar and adapts it to the previously set target value by applying the brakes, reducing the risk of collision
- TCS ( T raction C ontrol S ystem Drive slip regulation (traction control)): evaluates the wheel revolutions of the individual wheels per unit of time and detects slip ( e.g. caused by slippery ground) and tries to redirect the drive force of the spinning wheel to a wheel with better grip. If that is not possible (for example on ice), depending on the programming, braking intervention takes place sooner or later; Due to its function and the components required for it, the TCS is strongly linked to the ESP
- Eight airbags : two front, four side and two headbags or so-called windowbags that extend over all the rows of seats
- Electronically controlled active head restraints for the front passengers: Reduces the risk of whiplash injuries in the event of a rear impact by "coming towards" the head restraints
- Side impact protection: Struts made of high-strength steel in all four doors; The side becomes more stable, the car can withstand a side impact better, and the occupants' survival space is preserved
- Safety compartment : represents the body of the vehicle with no crumple zones that would be crushed in the event of a collision; Its main task is to preserve the survival space of the vehicle occupants and to prevent injuries from vehicle parts being pushed into the passenger compartment
Crash test
The Hyundai Genesis has so far been tested in internal, Chinese and US NCAP crash tests.
In the latter, it achieved the best possible rating of 5 stars in all crash tests (frontal and side impact and risk of rollover).
Planned quantities and prices
For the first sales year (2008), 35,000 units were planned for the home market of South Korea and 20,000 vehicles for export (for example to the USA). For the next 35,000 for South Korea and 45,000 for abroad.
In the US, prices for the sedan should start at $ 32,250 for the 3.8-liter V6 and $ 37,250 for the V8. No starting price has yet been announced for the 3.3-liter V6.
Miscellaneous
As with the Equus, Hyundai has designed its own logo for the Genesis for the Asian market.
At the NAIAS 2008 in Detroit, there were also two versions of the Hyundai Genesis - one with the Hyundai logo in the grill and on the rear, another without an emblem on the front and rear as a Genesis. The final form has not yet been decided, audience reactions should bring the decision.
The presentation at the Paris Motor Show was the first time a Hyundai Genesis was exhibited at an automobile fair in Europe. Hyundai would like to capture the reactions of the European public in order to find out how great the chances of a successful market launch in Europe are.
At the direct request of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak , Hyundai also offered the new Genesis Prestige in the long version as a bulletproof sedan from 2010 ; it was the first bulletproof car produced in South Korea .

Concept car
After Hyundai had announced the Genesis several times and showed it as a study at automobile shows, the Hyundai Genesis Coupé Concept was also shown for the first time at the LA Auto Show.
This study was particularly noticeable due to the orange paintwork, large air intakes, aggressive headlight and taillight design, a distinctive bead in the window line and a bonnet made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic that is jagged by air intakes . The 3.8-liter V6 aluminum petrol engine with variable valve control provided propulsion during the study.
Serial version
The production version of the Genesis Coupé retains the dynamic lines of the concept study.
The light graphics of the headlights have been revised, but the basic shape has also been retained here. The pointed front, which is indicated by sheet metal edges on the bonnet, in conjunction with the smaller but still large air inlets at the front, as well as the one adopted from the study, ensure a sporty appearance, which overall differs only marginally from the study Beading in the sidelines and hardly revised rear lights.
Launch
The official presentation of the production version took place at the New York International Auto Show on March 21, 2008.
Sales started in spring 2009 on the North American market. Prices started at $ 22,250 (€ 16,250) for the 2.0L and $ 26,750 (€ 19,550) for the 3.8 V6 and have remained stable so far.
From autumn 2010, the Genesis Coupé was also offered on the German market. Prices ranged from € 29,990 for the 2.0-liter turbo to € 34,990 for the 3.8-liter V6. The Coupé was only available in one equipment variant per engine. In addition to the metallic or mineral effect paint (€ 590) for both models, the options also included the plus package (€ 1,740) for the 2.0-liter and the six-speed automatic transmission with paddles on the steering wheel (€ 1,975) for the V6. Outwardly, the only difference between the German models is the rear wing (only the V6 variant is delivered with it). The psychologically important price limit of € 25,000 for the basic model, which was initially mentioned, was thus clearly exceeded.
The Genesis Coupe was built in Ulsan, Korea, the world's largest automobile plant.
Special versions
In autumn 2011, Hyundai Motor Germany launched a special series of the Genesis Coupé GT, limited to 50 units. The special model is equipped, among other things, with OZ Ultraleggera 19-inch light alloy wheels and a Bosi four-pipe exhaust system, lowered 30 millimeters and only available in Sleek Silver paintwork with a blue film. The foil is a modification of the foil design of the Genesis Coupé by Schumann Motorsport, which was first used in 2011 in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring.
The Rhys Millen Racing Team presented a single example with the V8 GDI engine of the Genesis sedan at the American SEMA show in November 2011. With coolers for the oil circuit and rear axle differential, the engine can cope with the combustion of larger quantities of gasoline and thus achieve 15 kW more, a total of 330 kW (449 hp). The vehicle, otherwise only modified with carbon and interior parts, is intended to draw attention to the vendor's tuning products. Series production is not planned, but the changes can be installed as a kit by American dealers. The reference to Rhys Millen arises from his participation in the Pikes Peak race 2010 with a comprehensively strengthened version of the production V6 engine (see details ). He has been a regular driver for Hyundai since then, after the cooperation with Japanese manufacturers ended in 2005.
Another approach takes the Genesis Hurricane SC ( S uper C harged). Also presented at the SEMA Show 2011, Hyundai itself worked with several tuning manufacturers. The optics, chassis and drive were changed. Like that of the RM 500, this now delivers 330 kW (450 hp), but is based on the series V6. This was equipped with a compressor, more powerful injection nozzles and oil pumps, as well as oil, differential and servo pump cooling. In addition, the intake tract and the exhaust system were replaced by adapted variants for the additional air requirement. Hyundai developed the vehicle to gain experience that it would like to apply in later model generations. Series production is not being considered, but some of the components are available from the respective suppliers in some markets.
safety
active
An ESP in conjunction with a traction control and an anti-lock braking system ensure active safety . To this end, electronic brake force distribution , a brake booster and a brake assistant will ensure more efficient braking maneuvers.
Furthermore, it remains to be seen whether some of the options available for the sedan to improve active safety (see above) will also find their way into the coupé.
Braking in general
- Dual-circuit diagonal braking system, servo-assisted,
- electronically controlled 4-channel anti-lock braking system
- with electronic brake force distribution (EBV);
- Brake assist; Traction control (TCS);
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
Brakes in front
- Internally ventilated disc brakes
- Diameter: 345 mm
- with a 4-piston fixed caliper
Rear brakes
- Vented floating caliper writing brakes,
- Diameter: 314 mm
passive
The Genesis Coupé is equipped with six standard airbags , a safety passenger cell, active head restraints, seat belt tensioners and belt force limiters.
Facelift
In August 2012 the Genesis Coupé received a facelift. The revised model was presented for the first time in March 2012 at the Geneva International Motor Show.
The front was adapted to the current design of the other models in the Hyundai range. It included a larger grille and slightly modified taillights with light emitting diodes. Refined materials are now also used in the interior. The chassis has also been redesigned and the alloy wheels have been given a new design.
- Hexagonal grille gives sports cars more independence
- Xenon light now available for both engine variants
- Power-to-weight ratio improved again
- Improvements in details bring noticeably more ergonomics
- Standard equipment in the new edition sensibly supplemented
- Up to 28 percent more power thanks to new technology
In addition, the performance of the two engines has been increased thanks to direct injection. The 2.0-l turbo now has a maximum output of 202 kW (275 hp) at a starting price of € 33,490.00 and the 3.8-l V6 as much as 255 kW (347 hp) at a starting price of € 39,600.00.
An optional eight-speed automatic transmission developed by Hyundai itself is new and can be operated using rockers on the steering wheel (€ 2,000.00).
For this purpose, two additional packages were offered, which were standard on the V6:
Light package (€ 1,650.00)
- Xenon headlights
- Headlight cleaning system
- high resolution speedometer display
- Door position lighting
Plus package (€ 1,950.00)
- Smart key system with start-stop button
- Premium sound system (8 loudspeakers + subwoofer + 6-disc CD changer)
- Automatically dimming interior mirror
- heated seats in the front
- Chromed door handles outside
In Europe, the revised Genesis Coupé was offered from October 2012 to the end of 2013. After that, the offer was temporarily discontinued due to lack of demand in Europe.
