With the introduction of the Hyundai Santa Fe in March 2001, the Korean car manufacturer tried for the first time to gain a foothold in the field of "sporty universal vehicles" ( SUV ). However, this did not really work, possibly due to the body design, which was still unusual at the time. Quite different in the USA, where the demand for the Hyundai Santa Fe was particularly high because of its design, so that it immediately became a bestseller in the Hyundai model range and there were long delivery times. The Santa Fe model in particular helped establish the brand on the American market. In Russia, the Santa Fe has been manufactured by Taganrogski Awtomobilny Sawod since 2005 .

Since 2007 the model has been called the Santa Fe Classic there . The Santa Fe will also continue to be assembled in the People's Republic of China , where it will be marketed under the brand name Beijing-Hyundai . In parallel, there has also been a cheaper version under the name Hawtai Santa Fe since 2008 . A special sport version is under the Haw-Tai brand name of the C9 which attracts attention with an aggressive styling and is available with outputs of 118 and 215 hp.

technology

All Santa Fe models of the first generation, with the exception of the variant with the 2.7-liter V6 engine, had front-wheel drive (2WD two-wheel drive) as standard . All- wheel drive (4WD) was available for all other engine variants for a surcharge.

All-wheel drive was a purely mechanically controlled system until the end of 2005. A viscous coupling distributed the drive forces between the front (VA) and rear axles (HA) depending on the slip. 60% VA to 40% HA were standard, with slip up to max. 10% VA and 90% HA. The viscous coupling used was replaced with the 2005 facelift (VGT diesel engines, 2006 petrol engines), an electronically controlled system with an electromagnetically actuated multi-disc clutch ("Interactive Torque Management"). This, in combination with the traction control (depending on the sales market), enabled variable power distribution for each individual wheel. When driving on the road, the system directs the entire drive force to the front wheels. The rear wheels are only supplied with drive power when the front wheels are spinning.

A traction control was available for different engine variants depending on the sales market. An ESP was never offered, while ABS was standard in most European countries.

All models with ABS had disc brakes on all wheels (internally ventilated at the front), those without ABS had drum brakes on the rear axle .

Off-road skills

Approach angle front / rear: 26 ° / 28 °

Ramp angle: 21 °

Ground clearance (min): 180 mm

Abdominal clearance: 207 mm

Gradeability: 33% (18 °)

safety

In the basic version, the models in Europe only had two front airbags . These specifications varied depending on the country, engine and equipment. In Switzerland, for example, for a long time only the 2.7-liter V6 gasoline engine with all-wheel drive and front and side airbags for the driver and front passenger were available (supplemented in 2004 by the 145-hp diesel engine).

Nevertheless, the Hyundai Santa Fe scored in one carried out in 2002 Euro NCAP - Crash Test 16 of 18 possible points in the side impact in the tested version without side airbags. In the frontal impact test, the Santa Fe achieved 9 out of 16 points, while pedestrian safety was rated poorly with one of four possible stars. Nevertheless, the result was above that of the successor model (with zero stars).

Facelift

In November 2004, various changes were made to the Santa Fe as part of a facelift. The model received a new all-wheel drive system, the new VTG diesel engine, new rear lights, modified bumpers, a radiator grille with cross braces and detailed revisions in the interior (including a modified dashboard).

In April 2006 a fundamentally revised Santa Fe appeared. In terms of design, the successor model no longer has anything in common with the predecessor. In terms of dimensions, the new model grew in all areas and now offered more space in the interior, so that for the first time a third row of seats is available at an additional cost, which extends the five-seater to seven-seater.

Rear view

The design and, above all, the quality and the materials used have been improved in order to appeal to younger customers with a modern design. A significantly improved driving behavior and sportier engines were decisive factors for Hyundai to confidently call the Santa Fe “Sportsroader”.

Since 2009, the Hyundai Santa Fe with his Korean sister model is Pyeonghwa Ppeokkugi 4WD within the agreed in August 2007 ArvinMeritor - Hyundai - joint ventures in the Czech Nošovice produces. The Pyeonghwa sister model is currently only available in Korea, the People's Republic of China and the Czech Republic. The same engines and the same interior are used in both models. They can only be distinguished by the brand logo used and the model name attached to the tailgate.

The vehicles for the North American markets, on the other hand, have been produced by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama in Montgomery ( Alabama ) since March 2006 . Due to the limited capacity of the plant, production had to be relocated to the Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia plant in West Point in September 2010 .

Facelift

In late autumn 2009, the Santa Fe received a facelift on the front and rear. From this point onwards, no six-cylinder petrol engine was used in Germany. In the USA and Latin America there was a modified 3.5l V6 with all-wheel drive and 210kW (285PS).

At the end of 2011, the Santa Fe was redesigned again, which can now be recognized by the silver-colored underride guards at the front and rear and a chrome strip at the rear. Further characteristics are the black surrounds of the fog lights and a black roof rail.

The two built-in cross members on the roof rail were omitted, now the Santa Fe has an open rail like most cars. The 2.2 CRDI diesel engine now develops 197 hp and offers higher torque. The new engine meets the Euro 5 standard.

Prices and equipment

The only equipment used in the CM is the GLS version. Among other things, it offers central locking with remote control, electric windows at the front and rear, an alarm system and an on-board computer, chrome-plated door handles, roof rails and electric exterior mirrors as standard.

Compared to its predecessor, the safety equipment has been extensively expanded. ESP and ABS as well as head, side and front airbags, electronic brake force distribution, active front head restraints and side impact protection in the doors are standard. A premium version was added later, which included additional leather upholstery, navigation systems, reversing camera, cruise control, xenon headlights, a light sensor and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Special equipment:

  • For example the comfort package with electrically adjustable leather seats and heated seats, a cruise control system and tinted windows as well as metal sill guards and leather steering wheel / gear knob; vehicles without all-wheel drive also have a double automatic air conditioning system with air quality sensor
  • an electric panoramic elevating / sliding roof
  • Metallic or mineral effect paint

Special models

On May 23, 2007, Hyundai launched the Santa Fe as a Vanilla White special model to increase sales, which were previously lower than the smaller Hyundai Tucson . The exterior of the special model was recognizable by its white paintwork, 20-inch alloy wheels, black fender flares and underride protection on the front and rear. In the interior, leather seats, steering wheel and gear knob, seat heating at the front, door sill strips in metal look, dark-tinted rear windows and a cruise control system were used. The model, limited to 100 vehicles, was only available with a 2.2-liter diesel engine and all-wheel drive. The Vanilla White was 9,000 euros more expensive than the standard Santa Fe with diesel and all-wheel drive.

To introduce the new Santa Fe (type DM), the old model was sold as a premium version with automatic transmission and all-wheel drive from September 2012. The cost savings compared to the previous list price were around 10,000 euros.

In September 2012 the third generation of the Hyundai Santa Fe came on the market.

Contrary to initial claims that the model would be renamed the Hyundai ix45 in Europe , the name Santa Fe was retained here. For the first time, the model is being offered in two lengths.

In addition to the Santa Fe with a short wheelbase, the Grand Santa Fe , which replaced the Hyundai ix55 , has been available since spring 2013 . In the USA and Asia, the short version is sold under the name Santa Fe Sport . The long version is called the Hyundai Maxcruz in Asia , in the USA it is simply marketed as the Santa Fe , in Europe as the Grand Santa Fe.

The Santa Fe received a facelift at the end of 2015.

The following motors are available in the USA:

  • Gasoline engine:
    • 2.4 (140 kW / 190 PS)
    • 2.0 Turbo (194 kW / 264 PS)
    • 3.3 V6 (213 kW / 290 PS)

The fourth generation of the Santa Fe was presented in February 2018 and had its public premiere at the 88th Geneva Motor Show in March 2018. In Germany, the first Santa Fe were delivered in August 2018. Compared to the previous model, the vehicle has grown by seven centimeters in length and one centimeter in width. At 2.765 meters, the wheelbase is 6.5 centimeters higher than that of the previous model. The fourth generation will no longer have a Grand Santa Fe for this. The technical basis is provided by the third generation of the Kia Sorento , the SUV is optically based on the smaller Kona .

In June 2020, Hyundai presented a revised version of the Santa Fe. It is scheduled to hit the market in September 2020.

The clarity is said to have been significantly improved. The rear side windows have become 41 percent larger and the driver should be able to overlook the second and the optional third row of seats more easily.
