Company history
The construction of the plant was announced on April 2, 2002 by the Hyundai Motor Company . At that time, an investment of US $ 1 billion had been estimated for the construction. The company was officially founded on April 12, 2002 . The laying of the foundation stone took place a few days later, on April 16, although the actual construction work did not start until November.
The first advertisement to find suitable personnel was issued on February 23, 2003. The 2,700 employees were hired in autumn. As part of the kick-off event, some of the team members at the Ulsan plant in South Korea had to take part in a training course that lasted several months. Meanwhile, the first began on 5 February 2004 by two 5,400 t heavy punching machines from Tokyo 's voyage. This then arrived on March 9th at Pier D-9 of the port authority in Mobile . The further transport took place with a barge on the Alabama Rivers . The remaining parts, on the other hand, were transported directly to the Highsmith plant by truck . The automatic punching machine did not arrive in Burkville until March 15, where it was immediately loaded onto a double-lane truck. The 56-mile haulage route was mostly a short stretch of Highway 80 , better known locally as the Selma Highway . The route had to be temporarily closed for this heavy transport. In June, the plant was finally completed so that the part-time workers could start their work. The construction work had cost a total of US $ 400,000 more than had been estimated. In addition, 72 automotive suppliers from all over North America have agreed to ensure the production of the plant. This creates around 5,500 additional jobs.
The start of pre-production began in July 2004, one month before the South Korean Ulsan factory managed to start series production of the new Sonata . At the factory opening ceremony, which was held on 20 May 2005, took the Hyundai-Kia - CEO Chung Mong-koo , Governor Bob Riley and President George Walker Bush , in part. On this occasion, HMMA started series production of the Sonata. The Limited , a special model of the Sonata, was named as Transform for the export markets outside North America , in order not to be confused with the Limited versions manufactured there. The export vehicles for Russia, however, were called NF . The model name Sonata was not in use there. On April 18, 2006, production of the new Santa Fe began .
In May 2007, the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of its own US $ 300 million engine plant in which 522 workers are to be employed. Since the completion in September 2008, four-cylinder theta engines have been assembled here. Up to 286,528 engines can be assembled here per year. The Elantra was added in November 2010.
Towards the end of the year the plant reached its maximum annual capacity and was no longer able to cope with the rush of orders. This was foreseen, which is why the decision was made in August to take the North American version of the Sonata out of the program for a short time. In truth, however, this should only enable the market launch of the new Sonata model, whose production began in December. As early as autumn 2009, the Sonata had considerable sales difficulties in the USA, which meant that production had to be reduced considerably. 300 jobs were lost as a result. The Santa Fe was also canceled. Its production had to be relocated to the West Point plant of Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia, Inc. The Sonata Transform was produced for export until December 2011, when it was finally replaced by the new generation.
An expansion of the engine plant will begin in March 2012. An investment of US $ 173 million is planned for the expansion. Overall, this measure is intended to create 214 new jobs and increase the capacity of the engine plant to a total of 300,000 units.
