As a representative of the lower middle class, the Hyundai Elantra succeeded the Hyundai Lantra in the summer of 2000 . In Europe, the two previous generations ran under the name Lantra , because Lotus Cars wanted to exclude buyers from a conceptual connection between Elantra and its Elan model . Although its production ended in 1992, the name remained until 1996, when the entire Elan production line was sold to the then Hyundai competitor Kia, which manufactured the Kia Elan Roadster until 1999. After its merger with Hyundai, the Elantra generation that appeared in mid-2000 was also given this name in Europe.

The Elantra was only available as a hatchback or notchback sedan . There was no longer a station wagon version, but the compact van Hyundai Matrix was presented as a replacement in April 2001 .

In autumn 2003 the Elantra received a facelift to the XD2 and three years later, in autumn 2006, it was removed from the model range in Europe. Until the introduction of the i30 in the summer of 2007, the Accent therefore filled the range between small cars ( Getz ) and mid-range ( Sonata ).

In Russia, the Hyundai Elantra XD is still manufactured as a notchback. The manufacturer there is TagAZ , which also produces its own vehicles. On the basis of the XD2 platform from 2003, the Kia Cerato was also created later , as well as the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage soft roaders with a heavily modified form .

This generation of Elantra was the last available in Europe so far. The following are slightly lower-cost versions of the compact platform on which the i30 is currently based.

In China, the third generation was built until 2016.

In 2006 a new generation of the Elantra (code name HD ) was presented at the New York International Auto Show and sold in the USA and eventually on all continents from the end of the year. The Elantra was not offered in Europe because the i30 is sold here, for which the same engines are available. In the United States, the Elantra was only offered with a 2.0-liter engine. A 5-speed gearshift was available as standard, with a 4-speed automatic as an option.

Since the end of 2008 in the United States is a wagon version under the name Elantra Touring offered, which is almost identical to the i30cw.

In July 2009, a mild hybrid version of the Elantra notchback followed in South Korea , which is the only hybrid in the world that runs on liquid gas and uses a lithium polymer battery for the first time . The vehicle's drive system is based on the 1.6-liter gasoline engine.

The Hyundai Celesta , launched in China in March 2017, uses the technical basis of the fourth Elantra generation. In addition, in China, the fourth generation is still sold as Elantra Yuedong after the sixth generation has been introduced . Since 2017, the vehicle has also been sold there with a 110 hp electric motor .

In April 2010, the current generation of the Elantra was presented at the South Korean Busan Motor Show. It is the fifth in the series and the third under the name Elantra .

After the Sonata  YF, the Elantra was the second vehicle to receive the "Fluidic Sculpture" design from Thomas Bürkle, who designed for BMW until 2005. The model has been sold in South Korea since November 2010, followed by the USA at the beginning of 2011, and finally Saudi Arabia , the UAE , Israel (under the name i35) and parts of the European Union in September . Here it is also offered as an EU import in Germany. In Europe and South Korea there is also the first Hyundai designed by Bürkle, the platform- related i30 . Its station wagon has been offered in the USA as Elantra Touring since 2008 .

The US standard consumption, which has been reduced by 17.7%, is broken down by the manufacturer according to changes made. The smallest contribution with 0.5% is made by the drag (cW) reduced from 0.32 to 0.28, the largest with 7.4% by the switch to a completely newly developed engine. According to the American EPA standard, the vehicle was the most economical in its class in 2011. To underline this market positioning, the manufacturer does not mention the acceleration time from 0 to 100 km / h. Instead, mention is made of the change from petroleum-based to soybean oil-based foaming of the seat cushions.

For the first time, heated rear seats, keyless access through a proximity sensor, a reversing camera, Bluetooth hands-free system and a touchscreen navigation system are available for the Elantra. In South Korea, a parking system is also available that arranges the Elantra in parking rows parallel to the direction of travel. In Europe it is available with Hyundai's largest choice of interior colors (fabric or leather in black or beige), but always with the same engine. It is the 1.6 L petrol engine from the i30, which also received valve control on the exhaust side.

The vehicle will be produced at the Hyundai plant in Ulsan (South Korea) and by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama in Montgomery , although the American plant is designed to be conservative in terms of its capacity, so that if the US demand increases, the South Korean production is also exported. In India the model is known as Fluidic Verna and is manufactured there by Hyundai Motor India . Dealers prominently highlight the Korean production location as an equipment feature in order to counter possible quality concerns from customers. Hyundai itself identifies the vehicles using the model code - the first letter is that of the production site: UD for vehicles from Ulsan, MD for those from Montgomery. This differentiation was also made with the i30, whose European production is marked with FDH (Korea: FH). The code will later be relevant for spare parts and add-on parts that can be approved, such as aluminum rims.

According to a Forbes list, the Elantra was the second best-selling car in the world in 2011 with 1.01 million units sold.

This series was offered on the Chinese market between 2012 and 2018 as Elantra Langdon .
