The Hyundai Motor India Limited is a company incorporated on 6 May 1996 a subsidiary of South Korea's Hyundai Motor Company , based in Chennai . With an annual production of 600,000 units, the company is the second largest automobile manufacturer in India. About 2,400 people are currently employed in the plants in Irrungattukottai (Plant 1) and Dindia (Plant 2). At the beginning of the vehicle identification number , the manufacturer uses the world manufacturer code MAL and the letter M in the eleventh position as the factory code.

Company history

After a two-year construction phase, Hyundai Motor India Limited was finally able to start work on September 23, 1998. The plant covered an area of 2.2 km². The maximum annual capacity was 200,000 units. The company's first product was the Santro , which, contrary to Hyundai's expectations, suddenly developed into a market success. The model was manufactured under license from the Kia Visto at the time . For export, the company used model names that came from Korean production in order to ensure greater production capacity for the model. So it was called Atos Prime in most countries .

In 1999 the second assembly line started work. The Accent GTX was assembled on this . The top model was called GTX Tornado . In the course of 2001 the construction work was completed after the construction of a third assembly line. The current Sonata Gold rolled off the line on this . This increased the maximum annual production to 300,000 units.

The Accent had a facelift as early as 2002 and was now called Accent Viva . The Santro, on the other hand, experienced a generation change in the following year. Unlike the Atos built in Korea, this generation is exclusively made in India. The export names have been kept slightly changed. In Great Britain, as well as in Poland and Ireland, the model name has been shortened to Amica . In the other countries, however, it was still known as Atos Prime . For the home market it was decided to use the model name Santro Xing .

In the same year, the company expanded its model range with the import of imported vehicles. A start was made with the Terracan SUV model . In March 2004 the Elantra was added. At the same time, the new Accent GLS came onto the market and replaced the Viva. The design was based on that of the larger Elantra and should appeal to a younger group of customers with its fresher design. The Getz also followed the trend of the new design . It wasn't until 2005 that the Tucson was added to the model range as a third import model.

But the style of the new models brought its problems. The Sonata, the former top model, appeared smaller as a result, which ultimately made it necessary to launch the new generation. This finally came on the Indian market under the model name Sonata Embera . After the lack of success for the redesign of the Accent on the home market, it was decided at the end of 2005 to revisit the original design of the model. The Accent GLE , called from now on , differed only slightly from the Viva, but in particular the new headlights, the radiator grille and the new bumpers cannot be overlooked. Since the model name of the Accent is thus confirmed and the current generation of it had been announced for India, it was launched under the name Verna , which had already successfully established itself in other markets as a parallel naming.

Hyundai Motor India Limited carried out another update of the model range in summer 2007. At that time, the new Getz Prime came on the market. The i10 followed in September and was originally intended to replace the Santro Xing. But due to the continued popularity of the model, it was refrained from. Instead, only the production of the export versions was discontinued to enable series production of the i10. The import of the Elantra and Terracan models was then discontinued towards the end of the year. In February 2008, the factory presented the new Uber Cool i20 . This is the first model that will be built in the newly built Plant 2. The production capacity was increased to 600,000 units per year. In December 2009, the company stopped production of the Sonata Embera. It was succeeded by Sonata Transform, which was sourced from the United States . But in order to lower the sales prices of the Sonata in India in order to make it competitive with comparable models, the company had to replace the Tucson. The choice fell again on an SUV with the Santa Fe . A short time later, the Verna was given a facelift and from then on offered as Verna Transform . The i10 had also been replaced by the Next Gen i10 . The Getz Prime had meanwhile disappeared from the model range.

The model range was also revised in 2011. The Accent GLE was slightly modified and has been known as the Accent Executive ever since . And the Fluidic Verna replaced the Verna Transform. As the first A-segment car model, Hyundai presented the new EON . In particular, the advertising slogan "India On" caused outrage in neighboring countries in India. At the turn of the year, the Sonata Transform was also dropped. This was replaced in January 2012 by the new Sonata .
