The Hyundai Stellar ( Hangeul : 현대 스텔라) was a mid-range car manufactured by the Hyundai Motor Company . The Stellar was released in September 1983 as the successor to the Ford Cortina MkV (identical to the Ford Taunus ), which Hyundai had previously assembled and marketed for Ford in South Korea . The body shape of the Stellar was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro , but the platform of the Ford Cortina was retained .

The engine and transmission were manufactured under license from Mitsubishi . By 1986 the 1.4-liter four-cylinder in-line engine 4G33 and the 1.6-liter four-cylinder in-line engine 4G32 - the same as in the Hyundai Pony together with the manual 5-speed gearbox KM119 or the 3-speed BorgWarner - Automatic 03-55L used - and a 2.0 liter engine in 1987. The equipment variants were "L" (basic equipment), "GL / CL" and "GSL / CXL". The GSL / CXL had electric windows, electric central locking, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, a trunk lid and fuel filler flap that could be opened from the inside, an elaborate stereo system, complete instrumentation (speedometer, trip meter, fuel gauge, water temperature display, on-board voltage display and oil pressure display) and, if required, air conditioning. This was a long list of equipment for the type and year of manufacture of the car.

Facelift

In autumn 1987 the Stellar II (or Stellar 2.0 in Canada ) was revised: The changes included a 2-way catalytic converter , new instrumentation, the larger Mitsubishi engine with 2.0 liter displacement and exhaust gas recirculation , a more powerful transmission, larger headlights and modified rear lights. Instead of double wishbones, the front wheels were suspended from MacPherson struts and wishbones, and the car got bigger brakes and a two-part cardan shaft. Upon request, the car was equipped with various aluminum wheels and (in Canada) with all-weather tires from the manufacturer Michelin as standard . This year there was also an optional automatic transmission with overdrive . The Stellar was not imported into the USA (and also not to Germany , the translator's note) because it could not meet the emissions standards there, but it was in Canada and other countries.

In the fall of 1988, the Stellar was replaced by the Hyundai Sonata in Canada . In December 1989 production was stopped.
