Hyundai HD160 / HD170 and Hyundai D0710 was a series of buses that the Hyundai Motor Company produced as successor models to the Hyundai R series from 1977 to 1982.

Model history

The history of the Hyundai Motor Company began with the assembly and sale of primarily Ford models in South Korea . The Ford Cortina was first assembled by Hyundai for Ford and later fully produced as Ford Coti . The Ford P7 - as Ford 20M - and the Ford Mustang were converted and sold by Hyundai for the South Korean market. This was later followed by the Ford Granada , which Hyundai assembled for Ford until 1985 and also sold. The Ford D series, in turn, was assembled by Hyundai, but marketed as the Hyundai D series and DK series, in the same way the Ford R series . With the Hyundai Pony in 1975, Hyundai introduced its first self-developed car, which, however, also consisted of components from the Ford Cortina and was equipped with engines from the later long-term cooperation partner Mitsubishi Motors . In a similar way, Hyundai renewed its commercial vehicle range in 1977 . First launched the pickup truck and as a 12-seater minibus built Hyundai HD 1000 , derived from the Ford Transit . Above this minibus version, the D0710, HD160 and HD170 were introduced. The basis for this was still the chassis of the Ford R-Series bus, with a front engine and rear-wheel drive.

HD160 1977-1981

The Hyundai HD160 as the first model in the series had a revised R-series chassis with a body structure from CCMC from Australia . The Ford R diesel engine continued to drive . First the HD160 was built as a touring coach and intercity bus. From 1978 there was a special city bus version , which was specially built for the Chinese market as Wanhaeng . Now there were also doors that could be opened and closed from the driver's seat. Towards the end of 1978, passengers could also open the doors at the push of a button.

New regulations for city buses were enacted in South Korea for 1982. In particular, the weight stood in the way of further development. Since sales of the HD160 were low in contrast to the competing models Saehan Motor BL and Asia Motors BD098 / 101, production without a successor was discontinued in the summer of 1981.

HD170 1977-1982

The HD170 had the same base as the HD160, but a larger body and was designed as a touring coach or intercity bus from the start of production at the end of 1977. Unlike the HD160, it had a MAN D0846HM-U 7255 cc diesel engine produced under license by Korea Maschines Department Doosan . In China it was again marketed as a Wanhaeng model. In 1981 the front headlights were revised, otherwise the model was produced without changes during its entire construction period until January 1982. Here, too, the sales figures were not high, so that an additional variant of the Hyundai FB was only introduced as a replacement .

D0710 1977-1981

The D0710 was a midibus derived from the HD160 with 25 seats and was introduced as a supplement at the end of 1977. In particular, it should be an offer for smaller municipalities for regular services and a competition offer to the Saehan Motor BL and Asia Motors AM807 / AM808 models. As with the HD160, the changed regulations and the low sales figures brought the end of production in December 1981. It was not until 1987 that Hyundai built a midibus again with the Hyundai Chorus .
