Markets

From October 1999 the first Equus was only sold on the home market of the Hyundai Motor Company in South Korea , where 15,000 units per year were built. It is based on the Mitsubishi Dignity .

An Equus (Centennial VS450) with a 4.5 liter V8 engine offered as a used car on the European market is usually one of 35 examples that were shipped to Germany for the 2006 World Cup . Hyundai was the main sponsor of the World Cup and therefore provided the vehicle fleet . These vehicles are mostly owned by automobile collectors.

Furthermore, in Germany there is an Equus JS350 from 2003 (with 3.5l V6) in private hands (former board vehicle of the Hyundai Mobis company).

Technology and dimensions

The Hyundai Equus is basically available in two different lengths and with two different engines;

  • approx. 5.1 m long normal version
  • approx. 5.4 m long long version
  • 3.5 l V6 petrol engine with 155 kW (210 PS) (Sigma Engine)
  • 4.5 l V8 petrol engine with 195 kW (265 PS) (Omega Engine, with Mitsubishi GDI direct injection )

It also shares various components with the Kia Opirus , which was developed after the Equus.

In March 2009 the second generation of the Equus was presented (code: VI). The new model is larger and is powered by the rear wheels. It was developed exclusively by Hyundai and is no longer based on the Mitsubishi Dignity, but on a Hyundai rear-wheel drive platform, together with Hyundai Genesis and Kia K9 .

It comes with a 3.8-liter V6 engine with 213 kW (290 hp) and a 4.6-liter V8 engine with 287 kW (390 hp). A long version with a 300 mm longer wheelbase and a larger 5.0-liter V8 with 320 kW (435 hp) are offered at a price of 135 to 146 million South Korean won (approx. 80,000–87,000 €). Technically, the new generation is based on the Hyundai Genesis ( rear-wheel drive platform), which is why it was also known as the Genesis Prestige . Furthermore, an armored small series was created based on the long version VL500, which is the first special protection vehicle from Hyundai. It was used as the presidential limousine at the G20 summit in November 2010 in Seoul .

Launches

The new Equus launched on March 11, 2009 in South Korea and in June also in the People's Republic of China . The market launch for North America was planned for the third quarter of 2010, for Europe originally in May 2011. Ultimately, however, the model was not officially offered in Europe. However, the model was presented at the IAA 2013 in Frankfurt.

Here, too, a handful of vehicles found their way to Europe and Germany via the European headquarters located in Offenbach am Main , which were sold on the free market after a few years of use and can now be found in collectors' hands or occasionally on the relevant Internet sales portals.
