The Hyundai Heavy Truck was a medium-duty truck that the Hyundai Motor Company produced from 1978 to 1997. In 1977, Hyundai began its longstanding collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors . Until then, Hyundai had only produced Ford models or took over the distribution of Ford models in South Korea . The heavy truck complemented the model range above the Hyundai D series based on the Ford D series and was a badge engineering model of the Mitsubishi Fuso The Great .
1st generation FV3 (90A) 1978–1985
The generation first presented in May 1978 corresponded fully to the Mitsubishi Fuso Great. First a 10.5-ton tipper vehicle with the drive formula 6x4 and an 11-ton freight truck and tractor unit (4x2) with a Mitsubishi Fuso 290 HP diesel engine went on sale . In September 1979 an 8.5- and 10.75-ton freight truck and tractor unit followed. A slight facelift took place in August 1981. With this, an 8.5- and 15-ton tipping vehicle was introduced as well as the (Mitsubishi license) Hyundai 8DC9-0A 310 hp diesel engine. From August 1982, various special vehicles such as concrete mixers , garbage trucks , tank trucks , refrigerated vehicles , crane trucks , fire trucks and others were available ex works. In April 1983, an 8-ton distribution truck and tipper were added to the range, and a 6x2 concrete mixer followed in August.
2nd generation FV4 (91A) 1985-1997
The model change for the Mitsubishi Fuso Great in December 1985 also brought the change to the second generation heavy truck. 8-, 8.5-, 11-, 11.5- and 15-ton versions were available at the start. The diesel engine, which continued to be built under a Mitsubishi-Fuso license, has now been revised as the 8DC9-1A with 320 HP as a drive. As usual, there was a choice of 4x2, 6x2 or 6x4 drive variants and various special vehicles.
- In October 1988 a 6x4-9.5-ton distribution truck followed in a low-floor design. From December 1989 an 8 × 4-20-ton tipper vehicle was available.
- In 1991 there was a slight facelift with now rectangular headlights. From September 1992 there was a 12.5-ton distribution truck variant.
- In November 1993, the Mitsubishi-licensed Hyundai-8DC11-355-HP diesel engine was introduced for the new variants 8x4-18-ton distribution truck and SZM as well as 21.5-ton tipper vehicle.
- A 10x4 truck with 60 tons was introduced in February 1994 and from February 1995 a 10x4 tipper truck and crane truck.
- For the heavier models there was a Daewoo Heavy Industries diesel engine with turbocharger and intercooler that developed 410 hp from November 1996 .
Production ceased in October 1997 and the Hyundai Super Truck became the successor.
