GM Korea Company is a South Korean automobile manufacturer that belongs to the US automobile group General Motors Company (GM).

GM Korea's roots go back to Daewoo Motors , which was separated from the Daewoo Group in 2001. The company has five manufacturing facilities in South Korea and one plant in Vietnam . In addition, GM Korea offers regional and brand-specific vehicle kits (CKD) for assembly at GM subsidiaries in China , the United States, Australia , Germany , India and Brazil . In 2008, the former GM Daewoo built more than 1.9 million vehicles, including CKD products. GM Korea produces vehicles and components for Alpheon, Chevrolet, Holden , Opel / Vauxhall and Buick , which are offered in more than 150 markets on six continents. On January 20, 2011 it was announced that General Motors plans to rename GM Daewoo to GM Korea with effect from March 2011 "in order to express the important role Daewoo plays in GM's global operations". Most of the former GM Daewoo products have been relabeled as Chevrolets. Almost every fourth Chevrolet model came from South Korean production.

history

GM Korea has served as the holding company for General Motors since its inception in 1972 . A partnership with Shinjin Motors and later also with Saehan Motor and Dong-A Motor was established . Since then, many of the models have been built by manufacturers for both domestic sales and badge engineering for export .

The GMK Chevrolet 1700 model was offered under the GMK brand from 1972 to 1978 .

In the competitive struggle, Dong-A took over his competitors in 1983 and created the new company Daewoo Motor through the merger . The cooperation with GM was continued.

In 1999 Daewoo Motor filed for bankruptcy for the first time, so that there was no way out of the search for further investors or even sales of works. General Motors even tried to break away from Daewoo completely. The partner companies Isuzu and Suzuki offered a more promising investment for the group through General Motors Japan at that time. But after several conflicts they came back to Daewoo because no buyer had been found by then. So it was decided in the course of 2002 to modernize the South Korean plants and to revise the model range based on the Japanese model. In the same year the company name was changed to GM Daewoo .

GM's 42.1% stake was held by its Australian subsidiary GM Holden , Suzuki, in which GM was still involved at the time, took over 6.8% of the shares, and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) took 6.0%. In July 2005 General Motors became the majority shareholder with just over 50%. The stake was continuously increased, most recently through a capital increase on October 28, 2009.

GM DAT played an important role in the GM group. In 2008, GM DAT sold around two million units, including CKD products. The company had five factories in South Korea and an assembly plant in Vietnam.

But the investment failed to save the company. In March 2011, the company again filed for bankruptcy. The brand name Daewoo disappeared from the South Korean market. All plants were bought by GM Korea in order to continue production. The Korean plants had developed into one of the most important parts suppliers of the GM group worldwide. The location in South Korea had also become indispensable for the automobile trade. The vehicles are now sold worldwide mainly under the Chevrolet brand name , but Daewoo was retained in South Korea until 2011. In Australia , the models were sold as Holden .

Current model series in South Korea

Chevrolet entered the South Korean market with the Aveo T300, Orlando and Malibu, while existing models were relabeled, e.g. B. Lacetti and Matiz became the Cruze and Spark models.

The Camaro and Corvette models come from North American production (USA and Canada) and have been offered as import vehicles since the “Chevrolet” brand was introduced in South Korea.
