history

It was founded in 1873 by August Bilstein in Altenvoerde, Westphalia . Window fittings were produced under the name AUBI, derived from August Bilstein, which soon made the company known far beyond the local region.

In 1927 the company had its first experiences as an automotive supplier: The son of the founder Hans Bilstein started the path towards the automotive accessories industry in 1927 by working with the Berlin Levator hoist factory, which was taken over in 1930. This also brought their crane production to Bilstein, which was only discontinued in 1992 after the takeover by Krupp.

1954 began the development of the single tube gas pressure damper based on the De Carbon principle:

Bilstein builds the first gas pressure shock absorber based on an idea by the French vibration researcher Bourcier de Carbon . A gas pressure cushion compensates for the volume difference when the piston is extended and retracted. From 1957 the production of gas pressure shock absorbers for Mercedes-Benz original equipment took place.

In 1991 it was taken over by Krupp Stahl AG; the company initially operates as Krupp Bilstein GmbH ; After the merger of the Thyssen and Krupp groups , the name was changed to ThyssenKrupp Bilstein

In 2005 ThyssenKrupp Bilstein and ThyssenKrupp Federn merged to form ThyssenKrupp Bilstein Suspension . ThyssenKrupp Federn und Stabilisatoren GmbH was spun off from ThyssenKrupp Bilstein Suspension GmbH in October 2011 and made an independent company with the aim of ensuring that the OEMs can reach the market independently .

Motorsport

Logo of the company in motorsport

The motorsport history of the company with the blue and yellow logo began around 50 years ago when Mercedes-Benz first installed gas pressure shock absorbers from Bilstein in a rally car - the Mercedes-Benz 220 SE “tail fin” won straight away. Porsche soon joined as a partner in motorsport, followed by Alfa, BMW and others.

Drivers like Niki Lauda and Alain Prost won Formula 1 races and championships with Bilstein dampers, there were five titles in the World Rally Championship, and a Porsche 911 all-wheel drive with Bilstein chassis won the Paris-Dakar rally . They won championship honors in the European Hill Climbing and Touring Car Championships, victories in the major 24-hour races in Le Mans , at the Nürburgring and in Daytona, as well as championship titles in the World Sports Car Championship. At times, up to 90 percent of the NASCAR field started on the company's products. In 2012, Bilstein Motorsport celebrated its 50th anniversary. A book about 50 years of BILSTEIN MOTORSPORT has also been published. In May 2013 Martin Flick became Head of Motorsport at ThyssenKrupp Bilstein.

Blue and yellow Bilstein car

From 2004 to the beginning of 2009, Bilstein worked with the Land Motorsport motorsport team to test a new generation of shock absorbers in racing. The blue and yellow Bilstein Porsche achieved a total of 19 overall victories in the BFGoodrich endurance championship and one victory in the 2009 Dubai 24-hour race . At the beginning of 2009 the Audi R8 LMS was equipped with shock absorbers. Here, too, they worked together with Audi Team Phoenix on the further development of the motorsport shock absorbers on the Nordschleife .

In May 2012, the blue and yellow Bilstein Audi R8 LMS Ultra used by Phoenix won the 24h race on the Nürburgring . Second and third place went to Mamerow Racing and Hankook-Team- Heico , whose vehicles were also equipped with Bilstein shock absorbers.

In 2013, Bilstein switched to a yellow and blue Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 with the starting number 007 for the traditional 24h race . The vehicle was able to achieve tenth place.
