24-hour race on the Nürburgring 2013

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 24-hour race on the Nürburgring 2013 (spelling: 41st ADAC Zurich 24h race ) was the 41st edition of the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring and took place from May 17th to 20th, 2013.

The race had to be interrupted for 9:33 hours due to rain and fog. The race winners were Bernd Schneider , Jeroen Bleekemolen , Sean Edwards and Nicki Thiim in a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 from the Black Falcon team with 88 laps covered.

background

The race took place for the first time on Pentecost and was not started on Saturday, but on Sunday at 5 p.m. The end was on Monday at the same time.

The DTM ran a race at the British Brands Hatch parallel to the 24-hour race , so that the DTM drivers could only intervene in the course of the race, the same applied to the WTCC drivers who drove a race on the Salzburgring . BMW drivers Augusto Farfus and Martin Tomczyk as well as Audi driver Mike Rockenfeller traveled from Brands Hatch during the race, last year's winner Marc Basseng from Salzburg. Farfus, however, did not even race because his vehicle, the BMW Z4 GT3 with starting number 19, had already retired at the time of his arrival at the Nürburgring.

So-called Code 60 zones were newly anchored in the regulations , in which yellow flags were waved twice and a speed limit of 60 km / h applied. Using GPS has been monitoring compliance with speed limits in Code-60 zones.

Balance of performance

The Balance of Performance ( German  balance of power ) is used to produce equality between the different GT cars. The DMSB can adjust several parameters for the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring. For GT4 vehicles, this includes the minimum weight, the tank capacity and, in the run-up to the race, the maximum performance on a roller dynamometer. For GT3 vehicles , there is also the diameter of the air flow limiter , the performance on an engine test bench and, for vehicles with charged engines, the maximum boost pressure.

For the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring 2013, the vehicles were classified in classes SP 9 (GT3 vehicles) and SP 10 (GT4 vehicles) as follows:

1 After the top 40 qualifying, the minimum weight was increased to slow the cars down in the race after they had proven to be slightly superior there.
2 After the Top 40 qualifying, the maximum tank capacity was increased to enable the vehicles to cover nine laps on one tank of fuel.
3 After the Top 40 qualifying, the minimum weight was reduced because the vehicles were too loud and had to be equipped with two additional silencers.

In addition, minimum pit times have been set for vehicles of classes SP 6 , SP 7 , SP 8 , SP 8T , SP 9 , E1-XP1 and E1-XP2 , as the teams had tried in the previous year to use the tank restrictors, which only allowed the fuel to run at a set speed in the tanks to get around. The minimum pit times increased with the number of laps driven in the race segment, which began with the start of the race or the last time you left the pit lane and ended when you entered the pit lane. The minimum pit times were measured between the pit entry line and the pit exit line. For the last 90 minutes of the race, this rule was overridden to allow a short stop to refuel ( splash and dash ).

free training

Free practice should take place on Friday at 2:25 p.m. and last 90 minutes. Due to thick fog, however, the training had to be postponed by 30 minutes and shortened to 60 minutes.

The fastest was the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 with starting number 23 from Rowe Racing with a lap time of 10: 18.667 minutes, followed by the Audi R8 LMS ultra with starting number 29 and the Porsche 997 GT3 R from FALKEN Motorsports . In total, only 133 vehicles achieved a timed lap.

Qualification training

Qualifying started on Friday at 7:35 p.m. and on Saturday at 11:20 a.m. While the first training session was supposed to last just under four hours, the Saturday training session was scheduled to last two hours.

The first qualification training took place in the wet, but the track began to dry out towards the end of the training session. The fastest was starting number 10 with a lap time of 8: 39.989 minutes, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 from Team Black Falcon , 1.178 seconds ahead of the Nissan GT-R from Schulze Motorsport with starting number 123. Behind it was already more than 11 seconds The backlog of the Audi R8 LMS ultra from Team Mamerow with starting number 2.

In the second qualifying, the track was dry, so the drivers were able to significantly improve their lap times from the first practice session. Here, too, the car with starting number 10 was the fastest with a lap time of 8: 23.181 minutes, followed by three Audi R8 LMS ultra with starting numbers 29, 4 and 2 as well as another Mercedes-Benz from Rowe Racing. The fifth placed was less than 2 seconds behind.

The training had to be stopped one minute before the time ran out because the Gazoo Racing team's Toyota GT86 had come off the lane in the Breidscheid area and crashed into the guardrails.

Top 40 qualifying

The Top 40 qualifying introduced last year started on Saturday at 5:50 p.m.

The ten best-placed vehicles from the qualifying sessions of the VLN Langstreckenmeisterschaft Nürburgring events prior to the 24-hour race and the 30 fastest vehicles from the two qualifying sessions were eligible to participate in the Top 40 qualifying. The vehicles were lined up at the start and finish line, and the vehicles started every ten seconds. After a warm-up lap on the Nordschleife, the participants started flying into two qualifying laps.

The top 40 qualifying was dominated by the vehicles of class SP 9 , which took the first 18 places. The ten fastest vehicles were within just 5 seconds. The number 4 Audi R8 LMS ultra from Phoenix Racing started from pole position with a time of 8: 17.212 minutes, followed by the number 7 works Aston Martin Vantage GT3 and an Audi R8 LMS ultra des with a gap of 1.150 seconds Team Mamerow with starting number 2, which was 1.861 seconds behind. The fastest car in another class was the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR from Manthey Racing with starting number 18, which competed in class SP 7 and achieved a lap time of 8: 23.990 minutes.

Only 39 of the 40 qualified teams took part in the final decision on the starting grid. The Porsche 997 GT3 R from Timbuli Racing with starting number 35 could not take part after an accident. The team also failed to repair the vehicle for participation in the race. The number 69 McLaren MP4-12C from Dörr Motorsport lost a wheel during the warm-up lap due to a defect in the rim, so that it was unable to complete a timed lap and had to start the race from 39th on the grid.

Race course

The race started at 5:00 p.m. After the weather was still sunny on Sunday morning, the first raindrops fell shortly before the start, but it initially remained dry.

The # 69 McLaren MP4-12C already suffered engine damage on the warm-up lap and was unable to start the race.

At the start, the Audi R8 LMS ultra with start number 4 took the lead, ahead of the Aston Martin Vantage with start number 7 and the Audi R8 LMS ultra with start number 1. The fourth-placed Audi R8 LMS ultra with start number 2 broke at the end of the first lap on the Döttinger height of the front spoiler . The car had to go to the pit twice for repairs and was able to continue the race just under two laps behind.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 with starting number 10 from Team Black Falcon also fell far behind. On the Nordschleife, after being touched by another participant, the left rear suspension broke and a return to the pits was only possible at slow speed. The subsequent repair took more than an hour.

Even in starting groups two and three, there were several contacts between the vehicles at the beginning of the race, some of them on the Grand Prix track.

On lap six there was a code 60 zone at the Schwedenkreuz , the vehicles had to brake to 60 km / h at this point. This led to a backwater that ended exactly behind a difficult to see passage. Uwe Alzen drove to the end of the traffic jam in the number 19 BMW Z4 GT3 and saw the last vehicle on the chain so late that he could no longer avoid a collision. This was the BMW Z4 of his teammates with the starting number 20, which lost about one lap to the top during the subsequent pit stop. The vehicle with starting number 19 had to be withdrawn later.

After the first hour two Audi R8s (starting numbers 4 and 1) led the field, with the Aston Martin with starting number 7 in third place.

After three hours the Aston Martin with starting number 7 was leading after it had passed the Audi with starting number 4 in a kilometer-long wheel-to-wheel duel on the Döttinger Höhe. Behind was the Audi with starting number 1, followed by the BMW Z4 with starting number 26, the Manthey-Porsche with starting number 50 and the best-placed Mercedes-Benz, the car with starting number 22 from Rowe Racing.

After 3:50 hours of driving, the rain that had already been expected set in. At this point in time, the two Audi R8 LMS ultra cars with starting numbers 1 and 4 were in the lead, with the front runner having completed one pit stop less. This was followed by the two Porsches of the Manthey team with starting numbers 18 and 50 and the Aston Martin with number 7. The Mamerow Audi with starting number 2 had dropped to 51st, the Black Falcon Mercedes with starting number 10 to 133rd. Shortly afterwards, the second Timbuli Racing Porsche (starting number 45) retired after an accident while lapping a slower vehicle.

At around 10:45 p.m. the race was interrupted after a racing time of 5:45 hours due to the persistent rain and fog.

At the time of the cancellation, the number 26 BMW Z4 of the Marc VDS Racing Team was in the lead . Since the result of the previous lap was counted when the race was stopped, the team slipped back to third behind the Aston Martin and the Manthey Porsche with starting number 18. This was followed by the Audi R8 LMS ultra with starting number 1, the second BMW Z4 from the Marc VDS Racing Team (starting number 25) and the second Manthey-Porsche (starting number 50).

The restart was scheduled for 8:00 a.m., after an introductory lap the race resumed with a flying start at around 8:20 a.m. The interruption was counted as a safety car phase, i.e. time intervals were canceled, lap intervals remained.

In wet conditions, the two BMW Z4s from the Marc VDS Racing Team quickly took the lead together with the Audi R8 LMS ultra from the Phoenix team (car number 1). When the track dried out, three Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS GT3s took the lead and were able to hold onto these positions until the last hour of the race. The number 25 BMW Z4 had meanwhile dropped to fourth place. Maxime Martin , who drove the last stint in the BMW Z4, was able to shorten the gap to the leading Mercedes-Benz by 20 seconds per lap and move up to second place in the final laps. In the final phase, Martin set the fastest race lap in 8: 22.088 minutes, which was less than five seconds above the best time in the top 40 qualifying.

The race was won by starting number 9, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 from Black Falcon with Bernd Schneider , Jeroen Bleekemolen , Sean Edwards and Nicki Thiim . For Schneider it was the first ever finish at this race. Bleekemolen had already left on Monday morning because his wife was expecting twins. For Mercedes-Benz as well as for all four drivers and the Black Falcon team, it was the first victory in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring.

Second place went to the Marc VDS Racing Team's BMW Z4 (starting number 25) with Maxime Martin , Andrea Piccini , Yelmer Buurman and Richard Göransson . The podium was completed by the Mercedes-Benz of the Rowe Racing Team (starting number 22) with drivers Klaus Graf , Thomas Jäger , Jan Seyffarth and Nico Bastian , who crossed the finish line just 0.158 seconds ahead of their teammates with starting number 23.

Of the 173 vehicles that started, 136 vehicles were included in the ranking, i.e. after the 24 hours had passed, they had crossed the finish line and completed the required 50% of the number of laps of the winner.
