24-hour race on the Nürburgring 2011

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 24-hour race at the Nürburgring 2011 was the 39th edition of the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring . The race was held from June 23 to June 26, 2011.

In the first five VLN races in 2011, five different brands from four different classes won the works BMW, Mercedes SLS, Ferrari 458, Hybrid Porsche GT3 and Audi R8. However, the regular Porsches without hybrid technology, which had been used to success in previous years, remained without victory. The reason for this was also the set of rules with the "Balance of Performance", which has been in force since 2009, with which all winning candidates are brought to a level of performance that is as similar as possible. This applies in particular to vehicles of the GT2 class, which are eligible to start at Le Mans, as well as the GT3 class intended for private drivers, in which a large number of vehicles are in use worldwide. Even after the qualification training, the minimum weights of some vehicles were changed by 25 kg. The Ferrari 458 was punished for its extra weight, which with an average speed of over 181 km / h completed the fastest lap on the Nordschleife since 1983, but did not show this performance in the preparatory races.

How thoroughly the performances were adjusted was made clear by the unusual decision of the Manthey team, which sent its four works drivers Lieb, Luhr, Bernhard and Dumas into the race in two similar Porsche 911 GT3s: on the current R model in the SP9 class (GT3 ) as well as on the RSR model in the SP7 class with a displacement of up to four liters, which, according to GT2 rules, received relatively little engine power (335 kW / 465 hp), but was allowed to use more downforce and racing technology. Just two hours after the start of the race, the decision was made to park the R model and use the RSR. This strategy ultimately led to the fifth overall victory in six years.

Due to the high power density of the top vehicles and their achievable speed, this race was again a "sprint race over 24 hours" and a new distance record was set.

For Timo Bernhard it was already the fifth triumph in the 24-hour race. He drew level with his previous team-mate Marcel Tiemann, who was injured due to injury, and last year's winner Pedro Lamy. Hans-Joachim Stuck ended his active motorsport career after the race at the age of 60. He contested the race in a 441 kW (600 PS) Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 built by Reiter Engineering from his Stuck³ team, together with his two sons Johannes and Ferdinand and Dennis Rostek, who was named "RoSTUCK" during the race weekend. Despite technical problems, the team finished fifteenth.
