24-hour race on the Nürburgring in 1978
The 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in 1978 , also known as the 7th International ADAC 24-hour race , was the 7th edition of the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring and took place from October 7th to 8th, 1978.
The race
Fritz Müller and Herberth Hechler achieved a hat trick in the 7th edition of the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring . The two were supported by the team's chief mechanic, Franz Gschwendtner , who only drove the Porsche Carrera RS during training sessions . The race started at 4 p.m. Edgar Dören was able to assert himself at the start and kept the lead for around 4 hours before he was overtaken by Wolfgang Walter / Werner Prinz and Fritz Müller / Herberth Hechler. Shortly before the end of the 7th hour of the race, the Edgar Dören, Wolf-Dieter Mast and Roman Feitler team retired due to an engine defect. Fritz Müller and Herberth Hechler were able to overtake Wolfgang Walter and Werner Prinz and did not give up the lead. Walter and Prinz were able to drive the fastest lap of the race, but they dropped out a little later because of ignition problems on their Porsche.
The VW Schulz-TM Automobiltechnik RG Essen team fielded the only diesel-powered vehicle in this race, a VW Golf. If there were other entries, the ADAC would have announced a separate class for diesel vehicles, but this did not materialize. The Golf drove in the class up to 1600 cm³ and took 33rd place overall and 6th place in the class.
In the class over 2000 cc won for the second consecutive year the trio Dietmar Hackner, Johann Weisheidinger and Heinz-Jürgen Mählenhoff in an Opel Commodore GS / E .
13 Simca Rallye took part in the strongest class of the race with 28 starters, the class up to 1300 cc; However, only two finished. The class was won by the trio Hartmut Müller, Gerhard Hennemann and Karl-Ernst Brune, who finished 23rd overall.
