history

The original name of the Pauwai valley , in which Poway is located, comes from the Diegueño and Luiseño language. They lived in the region until the Spanish colonization. In 1971 a dam was built; the resulting reservoir Lake Poway serves as a water supply and as a recreational area.

A 19-year-old man attacked the Poway Orthodox synagogue in April 2019 . He shot at synagogue visitors, killed a woman and injured three other people.
