Quartz Hill is an American town in California in Los Angeles County . It is a community-free area (census-designated place). It has about 11,000 inhabitants (as of 2004) on an area of 9.9 km². The location is at the geographic coordinates 34.65 ° north, 118.21 ° west. The name is derived from the quartz found in the area .
Location and geology
Quartz Hill is in the Antelope Valley and borders Lancaster , Northwest Palmdale and Palmdale . It's about 41 miles north of Los Angeles . The place is at an altitude of 716 m above sea level.
Gold has mineralized in quartz and pyrite veins along earthquake fissures in Quartz Hill.

population
The 2010 US census found that Quartz Hill had 10,912 residents at the time. Ten years earlier, the 2000 census showed 9,351 inhabitants.
73.6% of the population is white. The most common ancestry is German (16.3%) before Irish (9.2%). Only a small 6.1% population was born outside of the United States. 77.5% of households live in their own home.
economy
Quartz Hill was mainly used for agriculture until the 1970s . Mainly almonds and alfalfa were grown and turkey farming was carried out. The water level fell, causing the alfalfa to dry up. The almond trees fell victim to a disease. Today the residents live mainly from the aviation industry.
Until 1988 Quarz Hill had a small airport with the Quarz Hill Airport . The airport area was built on with residential buildings after it was closed. The IATA code for the airport was RZH.

Quartz Hill does not have its own police department. Police tasks of the offices of the Sherrifs of Los Angeles County in Palmdale and Lancaster perceived.

Quartz Hill is served by five public elementary schools (grades kindergarten through sixth grade) and two public middle schools (grades 6 through 8).
Quartz Hill has a public high school with Quartz Hill High School . This school was the first high school in Antelope Valley. The sports team is called the Rebels Controversy arose in the 1990s as the school emblem featured the Confederate flag and icons related to the sports team were southern icons. The school mascot was changed from a Confederate flag waving rebel to a rebel of the American Revolution in 1995 .
In December 2005, two teenagers were arrested for planning a high school massacre for Valentine's Day in 2006. They wanted to imitate the Columbine High School rampage .
The town also has a private school, the Antelope Valley Christian School . This private school offers lessons from kindergarten through twelfth grade.

The Los Angeles County Public Library has a facility in Quartz Hill.
Festivals
The Quartz Hill Chamber of Commerce has hosted the Almond Blossom Festival annually since 1950 .
