This section deals with the German version of the model, as there were slight differences to the American series in terms of equipment and engines.

The first MX-6 was sold exclusively in Germany under the name 626 Coupé . The technical basis is the third generation Mazda 626. The MX-6 was already the third Coupé model based on the 626, but the first two did not make such an appearance. Here, too, as with the 2nd generation of the Ford Probe described below, it is the sister model of the MX-6.

The vehicle was produced for the German market from mid-1987 to autumn 1991. It was based on some futuristic design studies from the early 1980s. Especially with the optional LCD speedometer and various other gadgets, the coupé stood out from the sedan.

The following engines and equipment were available in Germany:

  • 2.0i with 66 kW (90 PS)
  • 2.2i with 85 kW (116 PS)
  • 2.0 GT 16V with 103 kW (140 PS) (own equipment line)
  • LX: base
  • GLX: Base plus E-window, E-mirror and velor upholstery

Cruise control , all-wheel steering , liquid crystal speedometer and an electrically adjustable chassis were also available on request, just to mention the interesting extras. Leather upholstery, ABS and air conditioning , on the other hand, were reserved for the American market, just like the model powered by a 145 hp 2.2-liter turbo engine with intercooler . This engine was only offered in the first generation Ford Probe outside of America.

This model was the first to feature the so-called 4WS system . It provided improved cornering stability by steering the rear wheels towards the front wheels depending on the speed.

In September 1991 the coupe made its debut at the IAA in Frankfurt. The 626 sedan served as the basis . Drive, chassis and platform were related to the Ford Probe , which was built by Mazda together with the MX-6 and the US-626 in the USA.

The market launch took place in February 1992. There were two engines to choose from: a 2.0-liter 16V with 116 hp and a 2.5-liter V6-24V with 165 hp, ABS was standard in both models. The price for the 16V basic version was DM 40,500.

In January 1993 the top model with a 24-valve V6 engine and 4WS was presented. 4WS stood for "Four Wheel Steering", ie the steering of all 4 wheels. Up to a speed of up to 50 km / h the rear wheels were steered against the direction of the front wheels, at speeds above the wheels were steered in the same direction as the front wheels. As a result, on the one hand, the turning circle was quite small, and on the other hand, you could reach high cornering speeds at high speeds. The price of this model was 51,750 DM at the time.

In the summer of 1994, a modified V6 engine with 163 hp replaced the previous unit.

In February 1997 production was stopped.
