The Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE is a 2003 version of the RX-8 sports car , in which the two-disc rotary engine allows operation with hydrogen or gasoline.

history

This is already the fifth Mazda vehicle with a hydrogen-powered Wankel engine. In 1991 and 1993, respectively, the HR-X and HR-X 2 vehicles were presented. Also in 1993 an MX-5 series NA with hydrogen engine was presented, followed in 1999 by a Mazda Capella Cargo ( Mazda 626 ) of the third generation.

In October 2003 the Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE was presented at the Tokyo Motor Show. Around a year after the prototype was presented in Tokyo, Mazda received permission from the Japanese Ministry of Transport to carry out road tests with the combined gasoline-hydrogen drive. In March 2006, the first vehicles were delivered to fleet customers with whom Mazda works specifically (Idemitsu and Iwatani). More Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE followed in use for Japanese companies and local governments (2 pieces for the city of Hiroshima ) and the Yamaguchi prefecture on a leasing basis. Mazda said it expanded its activities in 2008 by participating in the HyNor project and made the first units of the further developed RX-8 Hydrogen RE available to the Norwegian hydrogen project.

After a facelift in 2009 there is no information about further development and production. The RX-8 Hydrogen is no longer offered in Germany. In 2010 a Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE took part in the demonstration race “Le Mans vers le future” - “Le Mans looks into the future”.

technology

The Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE was the first vehicle to combine hydrogen and gasoline combustion. In addition to the normal intake manifold injection for gasoline, two additional hydrogen injectors were installed for each rotor: One is located directly in the rotor housing, the second on the intake duct of the respective rotor. The engine has exhaust gas recirculation. The hydrogen tank with a capacity of 110 liters at 350 bar stores up to 2.4 kg of hydrogen and is installed in the trunk in addition to the 61-liter petrol tank (as usual under the back seat). These enable a range of around 100 kilometers with hydrogen plus 550 kilometers with gasoline for a total of 650 kilometers.

If the Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE is operated in hydrogen mode, it has a range of approx. 100 km. If the hydrogen supply runs low while driving, the system automatically switches to petrol operation. The driver can also manually switch from hydrogen to petrol operation while driving. For this purpose, the RX-8 Hydrogen RE has a switch in the form of a rotary rotor (glowing blue during hydrogen operation). Switching from petrol to hydrogen operation is only possible when the car is stationary.

The bivalent Renesis rotary engine has the following data:

Engine 2-disc rotary engine
Chamber volume 2 × 654 cm³ (cubic capacity equivalent: 1308 cm³)
Operating mode hydrogen petrol
power 80 kW (109 PS) 154 kW (210 hp)
maximum torque 140 Nm at 5000 min -1 222 Nm at 5000 min -1
transmission 5-speed manual transmission / 4-speed automatic transmission
Top speed 170 km / h (H 2 operation)
Acceleration 0 - 100 km / h 10 s
Range 100 km 550 km

reception

In a driving test in 2009, the magazine auto motor und sport described the vehicles as "ingenious finger exercises" and criticized the extremely low overall efficiency (→ well-to-wheel ) of the hydrogen vehicles. In conclusion, she wrote: "It would make much more sense to put a pure electric car on its wheels right away and to forego the detour via hydrogen hybrids."

The Mazda5 Hydrogen RE Hybrid presented in April 2009 (outside Germany also Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid ) combines the hydrogen rotary piston engine with an electric motor. The system converts the energy obtained with the combustion unit into electrical current, which then drives the electric motor and thus the vehicle. Compared to the RX-8 Hydrogen RE, the range of the hybrid Mazda has been doubled to 200 kilometers with a hydrogen charge, while the maximum output has been increased by 40% to a total of 110 kW / 150 PS. If no hydrogen is available, the driver can use the dual fuel system to switch the combustion engine to petrol operation at any time, as with the RX-8 Hydrogen RE.
