The Nordischer Klang is a cultural festival for music and art from Northern European countries that takes place in Greifswald every May .

The festival offers artists from the Nordic countries the opportunity to present themselves outside of their home country. The program consists of concerts, exhibitions, readings, lectures, films, theater performances and a children's program from the five Nordic countries as well as from the other countries bordering the Baltic Sea.

The organizer is the Kulturverein Nordischer Klang e. V., which is associated with the Institute for Fen and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Greifswald . Thereby we work closely with the cultural institutions of Greifswald, who contribute with their own program items. Chairman of the Nordic Sound Association V. is Joachim Schiedermair.

The Nordic Sound Festival has been held annually since 1992.

Usually the festival is under the auspices of a Nordic minister and a German minister.

Programs

2008

In 2008 the 17th Nordic Sound took place from May 2nd to 9th under the patronage of Icelandic Minister of Culture Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir . In addition to many cultural program items from the North and Baltic Sea region, u. a. also Viktoria Tolstoy and LaGaylia Frazier.

2009

The 18th Nordic Sound took place from May 2nd to 9th, 2009 under the patronage of the Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Erwin Sellering and Finland's Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb , whose homeland was at the center of the cultural festival. Participants in the festival included the Finnish singer Johanna Iivanainen, who performed with the saxophonist Eero Koivistoinen , the Marilyn Mazur Group and the Sami singer Sofia Jannok . In addition, various comic exhibitions took place, including a. Drawings by Steffen Kverneland.

2010

The 19th Nordic Sound took place from May 6th to 15th, 2010. This year Norway and the Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , Erwin Sellering, took the patronage . Concerts were given by the Danish progressive / rock band The Savage Rose , the Swedish entertainer Sylvia Vrethammar and Valkyrien Allstars , a folk / pop band from Norway.

2011

In 2011, the Nordic sound celebrated its 20th birthday from May 5th to May 15th. The patronage was the Swedish Minister of Culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth . The Elin Larsson Group (S), the Jan Lundgren Trio & LaGaylia (S / USA; special guest: Lars Danielsson ), the Danish Pop Night with Bird and Catbird, the Wimme Saari Group (FIN) and the event series “Universum “ By the universal artist Per Kirkeby .

2012

The 21st Nordic Sound took place from May 3rd to May 14th under the motto “mighty mighty”. The patronage was Denmark's Minister of Culture Uffe Elbæk together with the Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Erwin Sellering . Greifswald brought the Olsen Gang into town and Morten Grunwald alias Benny, the last living actor in the gang trio, presented a new biography about the Egon actor Ove Sprogøe together with MDR presenter Janine Strahl-Oesterreich . In addition, the audience expected the screening of the new animated film The Olsen Gang in good company and an evening all about the Olsen gang predecessors Pat & Patachon .

The jazz trombonist Nils Landgren (S) played together with the NDR Bigband , the pop band Czesław Śpiewa (P / DK), EstherOrkester (N) and The Irrationals (FIN). The founder of avant-garde jazz in the former Soviet Union Vyacheslav Ganelin came with his current trio Priority.

2013

The festival , which is under the auspices of Iceland, took place from May 2nd to 13th for the 22nd time and was opened with a performance by Anna María Björnsdóttir (IS). A special feature was a music video produced for Greifswald, in which the artist Kitty Von-Sometime (IS) staged 14 young women in flashy costumes in the Greifswald landscape as part of her Weird Girls Project. Further highlights were the India Night with Møll (N) and Tilbury (IS), the Finnish pop band Mariska & Pahat Sudet and the German debut of the blues singer Jes Holtsø alias Börge, former actor of the Olsen Gang .

2014

The 23rd Nordic Sound took place from May 2nd to May 12th and was under the patronage of the Finnish Minister of Education Krista Kiuru and the Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Erwin Sellering . The festival opened with the German premiere of the symphonic jazz poem “Suomi” by the Finn Heikki Sarmanto and the Swedish jazz musician Nils Landgren , who performed with the Vorpommern Philharmonic Orchestra.

You could see the band Andalusian Conspiracy (N), the Gothenburg Gadjos (S), the Roger Berg Big Band (S) with their Polish guest jazz musician Soyka, the indie jazz band Johanna Elina Group (FIN / DK), the international vocal ensemble IKI, the country pop band The Bandettes (S) and the band Ted Glen Extended (N) even celebrated their foreign premieres.

As part of the Nordic Sound's focus on Finland, Greifswald was chosen as the satellite location of the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2014.

2015

The cultural festival took place for the 24th time from May 1st to May 10th. The patronage was held by the Kingdom of Norway. For example, there was the Norwegian trio Gammalgrass, the post-rockers Róa, who performed outside Iceland for the first time, the "Folkhall" band Snakka San and SVER. The jazz bassist Kristin Korb , who lives in Denmark , made a guest appearance for the second time.

2016

The festival celebrated its 25th anniversary from May 5th to 15th. A special feature was that in 2016 all five Nordic embassies from Berlin took over the patronage. In addition, Greenland was brought into focus for one evening. Musical highlights included the Danish Radio Big Band , the instrumental pop band Wintergatan (S), ska-pop rockers Razika (N), the bagpipe folk Trad.Attack! (EST), the indie-electro band Vök (IS), the jazz soloist Birgitte Soojin as well as the jazz-punk trio Mopo (FIN) and the world-famous tuba virtuoso Øystein Baadsvik (N), who is part of the innovative orchestra Musika Vitae (S) was accompanied.

2017

The Nordic Sound took place from May 4th to 14th under the patronage of the Swedish Minister of Culture and Democracy Alice Bah Kuhnke and the Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Erwin Sellering . The festival headliner was the Finnish accordion virtuoso Kimmo Pohjonen . The Nordic sound again offered a wide range of musical styles this year: from vocal folk hop by the Finnish girl band Tuuletar, to alternative music by the Kapl̩i project from Latvia, the Swedish jazz quartet around the composer Cennet Jönsson, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Western Pomerania with the soloist Karen Dornbusch , the UniSinfonieOrchester Greifswald with the soloist Mika Seifert, the Norwegian soul singer Lisa Nybrott, the Estonian pianist Rein Rannap, the Krupka Trio from Norway, the Monday Night Big Band and Mimi Terris from Malmö, the Latin quartet around Lázara Cachao and Edith Tamayo Denmark, Cuba and Mexico, the Icelandic electro duo Rest in Beats, the girl band Echoes in Veil from Denmark to the Estonian folk pop band Curly Strings and the soul pop queen Miss Tati.

Works by the Estonian Arne Maasik, the Bornholm native Angelika Mousson and the Danish Ken Denning were shown in exhibitions.

The Film section featured The Girl King by Mika Kaurismäki , The other Side of Hope by Aki Kaurismäki and Þrestir by Rúnar Rúnarsson .

The festival placed a focus on comics and graphic novels . There was also an information forum with Filippa Hella, Ola Hellsten, Annette Herzog , Espen K. Holtestaul, Kristian Krogh-Sørensen, Joachim Schiedermair, Øvind Vågnes, Nina Ernst and Camilla Storskog.

The panel discussion on right-wing populism in Northern Europe was a contribution to European Week. The Lord Mayor of Lund Lennart Prytz, who gave a lecture on democracy in times of populism and elites , took up a similar topic .

The 100th anniversary of Finnish independence also had an impact on the Nordic sound. Four events took this as an opportunity.

2018

The Nordic sound took place from May 3rd to 13th under the patronage of the Estonian Minister of Culture Indrek Saar and the Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Manuela Schwesig . The opening ceremony was attended by u. a. of the Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia in Berlin Mart Laanemäe and the former Federal President Joachim Gauck in the Theater Vorpommern. With the 34-member Eesti Politsei- ja Piirivalveorkester (the Estonian Police and Border Guard Orchestra) with the participation of the singer Liisi Koikson , the largest guest ensemble in the history of the festival performed in the opening concert. Also played u. a. Tarabband and Frigg (Folk & World Music Night), the Marja Mortensson Trio and Vassvik (Sami Joik ), MiaMee and Opus (Electro Night), Sniksnak and Timshel (Indie Night), as well as Skenet (Folk Rock) and DoktorDoktor (Hiphop) for the closing party one evening each. On the last day Andres Uibo gave an organ concert in St. Nikolai Cathedral .

2019

From May 3rd to 13th, the 28th edition of the music and culture festival ran over the Greifswald stages. The patronage was the Icelandic Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir together with the Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Manuela Schwesig . The program included AyOwA, Broen, Moses Hightower , Sousou & Maher Cissoko, the Obi Trio feat. Denise Fontoura, Kajsa Balto, Sex Magick Wizards, Klaki, Ritva Nero and Östblocket. Readings were given by Johan Harstad ( Max, Mischa and the Tet Offensive ) and Johanna Sinisalo ( Iron Sky. Renate and the Mondnazis ).
