Life

Baadsvik began playing the euphonium in a local brass band when he was ten. Since he was not enthusiastic about music at the time, he stopped again after three years. At the age of 15 he began playing tuba in another orchestra and at 16 he joined a brass band . After a year and a half he was accepted as a member of the Norwegian National Youth Wind Orchestra. At the age of 18, he won first prize at the National Soloist Competition in Norway. At the age of 20 he began studying music with Michael Lind at the Royal Stockholm Academy of Music in Stockholm. After a year in Stockholm, he took the position of principal tuba player at the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra (Sweden) for two years. Øystein Baadsvik studied with Michael Lind , Roger Bobo , John Fletcher , Arnold Jacobs and Harvey Philips , among others .

He began his international career as a winner of the prestigious Concours International d'Exécution Musicale (CIEM) in Geneva in 1991.

Shortly after the publication of his first solo CD with works by Hindemith , Madsen and other composers, it received excellent reviews in international music magazines around the world. The American Record Guide named Baadsvik one of the world's best tuba soloists with this spectacular solo CD.

In 1997, Baadsvik stopped playing tuba and spent more time with his family. In addition, he trained to become a computer technician.

In 1999 he received a two-year scholarship from the Norwegian state so that he could continue his work as he intended. Since then, Øystein Baadsvik has been a sought-after soloist and teacher all over the world. As a soloist he plays tuba repertoire with orchestra or works with jazz, rock and pop musicians. No matter what genre he works in, communication between him and his audience is always his most important obligation.

He is constantly working to achieve new musical aspects of tuba playing. As a result, new modern techniques emerged, which he incorporated into his works. Among other things his "lip beat", with which he can generate percussive drum sounds in the lower registers. At a concert in the USA he played with a coin in the mouthpiece [Note: some Norwegian coins have a 2mm hole in the center]. Or, for example, in his solo work “Fnugg”, in which he uses didgeridoo techniques.

To date, Øystein Baadsvik has premiered more than 30 solo works by composers from the USA, Russia, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland. He also composed and conducted his own orchestral works.

His solo CD "Tuba Carnival" was released in September 2003 in over 40 countries. Thanks to the success of the first edition with 1,500 CDs sold within just six days, Baadsvik received an exclusive contract with the BIS label .

Baadsvik mainly plays a Miraphone Eb tuba.

Øystein Baadsvik is married and has three children.
