Tilbury is a town in the unitary authority Thurrock ( Essex ) in England . It has 12,091 inhabitants (as of 2001) and is located on the north bank of the Thames . Tilbury has a seaport and a fortress . The Tilbury Power Station is on the banks of the Thames .

history

In the middle of the 7th century, Cedd , Bishop of the East Saxons, founded a monastery in Tilaburg which, along with Ythancaestir (Bradwell-on-Sea), was an important mission center of that time.

Elizabeth I had her main army stationed here in 1588 to prevent the Spanish Armada from conquering London , although the Thames was difficult to cross at this point. The Tilbury speech given to the army on the occasion is considered the Queen's most famous speech.

About 3.8 km east of Tilbury is the Coalhouse Fort , built in the 19th century , which was of strategic importance especially in the two world wars.

The fortresses of Tilbury ( Tilbury Fort ) were a significant defensive fortification for London , especially during the fights against the Spanish Armada and during the Anglo-Dutch wars. The first fortress at Tilbury was built by Henry VIII in 1539 .

The seaport Tilbury is the third largest in the UK (after London Gateway and Felixstowe ).

By Tilbury which runs London, Tilbury and Southend Railway which currently through that railway companies C2c is operated. There are two train stations in the Tilbury area: Tilbury Town and Tilbury East. Another train station, "Riverside", was closed in 1990, and since then the traffic to the ferry to Gravesend has been ensured by a bus line .
