The Tilbury power stations is with coal , oil and biomass -fired coal power plant on the north bank of the Thames at Tilbury in Essex . The system consists of several units that were built at different times or are under construction.

Power plant units

Tilbury A

The first coal-fired power plant Tilbury A with 360 MW was built from 1951 by the state energy supplier, the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB). It operated until 1981, then was shut down and demolished in 1999.

Tilbury B

The second coal-fired power plant, Tilbury B, with 1,428 MW output, was also built by the CEGB from 1961 and put into operation in 1968. In 1990 the power plant was privatized and came to the energy supplier National Power , as of 2013 the owner is RWE npower . The plant consists of four power plant blocks, whereby only three blocks are normally in use, while the fourth block serves as a reserve in order to be able to maintain the energy supply during maintenance work in the other blocks.

Tilbury B was expanded in 2004 to allow larger coal ships with up to 65,000 tons of coal to unload the cargo.

In May 2011 there were plans to convert Tilbury B into a biomass power plant with a reduced electrical output of 750 MW. The wood chips required for this come from RWE's own pellet factory Waycross in Georgia (USA) and have to be imported. The converted plants, which mainly burn biomass, went online in February 2012. In the case of pure coal-fired power plants, wood pellets can also be added to the coal, which is easily possible up to 10%. In doing so, performance is reduced, but access to substantial subsidies and the reduced offsetting of carbon dioxide emissions are made possible.

Just a few days after commissioning, the new plant was badly damaged by a major fire in which around 4,000 tons of the wood pellets burned.

In July 2013, the operator announced the shutdown in October 2013.

Tilbury C

At the beginning of 2007, the owner RWE npower announced that it wanted to replace the Tilbury B power station unit with a new, "cleaner" coal-fired power station designed for 1,600 MW. Tilbury C was planned to be operational in 2014. [outdated]
