Indrek Saar

Indrek Saar (born February 20, 1973 in Kuressaare ) is an Estonian politician and actor . He belongs to the Social Democratic Party of Estonia (SDE), of which he has been chairman since June 9, 2019. From April 2015 to April 2019 he was Minister of Culture of the Republic of Estonia.

Life

Indrek Saar was born on the island of Saaremaa . His father, the lawyer Jüri Saar (* 1946), was the district administrator of the Saare district from 1992 to 2003 and a member of the Estonian parliament ( Riigikogu ) from 2003 to 2007 .

Indrek Saar attended school in Kuressaare until 1991. In 1996 he graduated from the Music and Theater Academy in Tallinn with an acting degree . From 1996 to 2005 Saar was the director of the Rakvere Theater . At the same time he was a member of the board of directors of the “ Estonia National Opera ” in Tallinn.

politics

Saar joined the Estonian Social Democrats in 1998. He initially worked on the local political level. From 2007 to 2015 he was a member of the Estonian Parliament. In 2009 he became deputy chairman of the Estonian Social Democrats.

Since April 9, 2015 Indrek Saar has been in the cabinet of Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas, Estonian Minister of Culture. He took over the same post on November 23, 2016, in the successor government to Jüri Ratas . He was also able to win a seat in the Riigikogu in the 2019 parliamentary election. Since his party no longer became part of the government, he has been a member of parliament again. In the following years he also took over the chairmanship of the party and parliamentary group.

Private

Indrek Saar is married to the actress Ülle Lichtfeldt (* 1970). The couple have two children.
