Kimmo Pohjonen (* 16th August 1964 in Viiala ) is a Finnish accordion - virtuoso .

His musical repertoire covers a wide range of different styles such as folk music , classical music , rock and improvisation .

Pohjonen studied classical music in Helsinki , but always experimented with new sound forms and the combination of styles as diverse as folk and techno . With the band Ottopasuuna, he fused elements of traditional Finnish folk music with American bluegrass .

In particular through the use of electronic effects and samples , he expanded the sound spectrum of his accordion playing to orchestral dimensions. The projects Kluster and KTU (with Trey Gunn and Pat Mastelotto ) were created through the collaboration with the sampler Samuli Kosminen . Pohjonen sometimes designs his live appearances as multimedia stage and light shows.

Together with Samuli Kosminen, Pohjonen won the Finnish Jussi Film Prize for the best film music in 2006 in the Finnish film Jade Warriors . The director Kimmo Koskela filmed Pohjonen's biography under the title Soundbreaker (2012, Germany 2014) .
