action

The Finnish blacksmith Kai was left by his girlfriend Ronja. She gives some of Kai's items to the antique dealer and Kalevala researcher Berg. Berg is in possession of a Chinese metal casket that was found on a bog body in Finland. He suspects a connection with the Sampo forged by Ilmarinen . When Kai's hair remnants come into contact with the box, the box begins to open. To get to the bottom of the matter, Berg goes to Kai to cut his hair off. However, these are not enough to open the box. Berg goes to Kai again, this time with the box. He's just about to stop him from suicide. When you touch the box, it opens and a demon drives into Berg. At the same time Kai receives the memory of the reborn Chinese fighter Sintai.

This is chosen to fight against the last remaining demon who wants to turn the world into hell. As a thank you for this, he should leave the cycle of rebirths and be allowed to move directly into nirvana. Before a decision can be made, Sintai leaves the army undetected and wanders into a village. There he meets Pin Yu and falls in love with her.

While Kai tries to forge the Sampo again with the help of Berg, all attempts by Ronja to leave the city are foiled. Kai now realizes that his alter ego Sintai failed in destroying the demon. Although he beheaded him, he did not defeat him. When Sintai sees Pin Yu meeting her former lost lover and Sintai's student and friend Cho, he decides to keep the demon's head in his father's box and to move the decision into the future. Kai finally succeeds in destroying the demon and he can hope that he will win Ronja back.

criticism

Cinefacts.de says about the film: “The strength of the film lies above all in the brilliant and meticulously worked out narrative strategy. The story jumps in the times and places, lets them merge together again and create a whole. "

Screendaily, on the other hand, speaks of:

“Between long stretches of studious dialogue and explanations, there are a few expositions of kung-fu, but none of them is either elegant or imaginative enough to parlay with the genre's best. Lightness in all senses of the word is one thing that Jade Warrior badly needs, both in the director's approach to the material and the luminosity of the images on screen. Though evident efforts have been made to ensure the production looks as opulent as possible, neither the production design nor the CG effects make much of an impression. Certainly it is no match for the grand shows offered by Chinese cinema in recent years. "

“Between long stretches of detailed dialogue and explanation, there are some kung fu performances, none of which are elegant or imaginative enough to compete with the best of the genre. [Jade Warrior lacks] the ease with which the director translates the material and the brightness of the images on the screen. Although efforts have been made to make the production look as opulent as possible, neither the production design nor the computer effects make a big impression. There is no doubt that it does not match the great spectacles of Chinese cinema in recent years. "
