In Kalevala, Seppo Ilmarinen is the name of a blacksmith who is a hero of Finnish mythology .

history

Ilmarinen forged the Sampo for Louhi , the ruler of the Nordland, and courted the hand of the Nordland daughter. Louhi accepted the sampo, but broke her promise and refused Ilmarinen her daughter. Nevertheless, he won her over.

As a revenge he later tried together with Väinämöinen and Lemminkäinen to steal the Sampo. The Sampo was destroyed in the process.

When Ilmarinen's wife was killed by a herd of wild animals that Kullervo had set on her, Ilmarinen mourned greatly and forged a woman of silver and gold to replace her . However, he discarded it because it was cold.

In the Estonian folk tale "The Dyers of the Moon", Ilmarinen forges the moon and millions of stars from silver and gold on behalf of God in order to light up the night and thereby prevent the devil from doing evil.

Others

The band Amorphis processed the story of Ilmarinen and the forging of a woman out of gold and silver in the song "Silver Bride" from the album "Skyforger" (2009). The band Korpiklaani mentioned Ilmarinen in their song "Rauta" / "The Steel", in which he forges a special sword.
