Viiala train station

Originally a small village in the Akaa parish , Viiala developed into an industrial town at the end of the 19th century. A steam-powered sawmill had already been founded in 1873. After Viiala was connected to the railway network in 1876 and had its own train station, a glassworks and brickworks followed. The municipality Viiala was formed in 1932 from parts of Akaa and the neighboring municipalities Lempäälä and Vesilahti . The municipal area increased in 1946 when the Akaa municipality was dissolved and its area was divided between the newly established market town of Toijala and the Kylmäkoski , Sääksmäki and Viiala municipalities . In early 2007 Viiala merged with Toijala to form the city of Akaa.

Until the 1990s Viiala was an industrial site with three large factories. However, the Viiala leather and file factories were closed in 1995 and 1996 respectively as a result of the Finnish economic crisis, and in 2004 the production of wood-based materials in the UPM-Kymmene Group's factory was also discontinued.
