Heinrich Douffet

Karl Heinrich Douffet (born May 25, 1934 in Teplitz-Schönau , Czechoslovakia ; † May 2, 2017 in Freiberg ) was a German geologist , monument conservator and local politician ( CDU ). In 1990 he was a member of the GDR's first freely elected People's Chamber .

Life

Douffet attended elementary schools in Potsdam and Ladowitz as well as high schools in Dux and Freiberg . From 1952 to 1957 he studied geology at the Bergakademie Freiberg . He then worked as a mapping geologist and group leader at the Freiberg Geological Service until 1983. In 1975 he received his doctorate at the University of Greifswald on the subject of stratigraphy and tectonics of the Southern Vogtland Ordovician .

From 1963 to 1989 he was the district commissioner for monument preservation in the Freiberg district . During this time he successfully campaigned for the preservation of the historic city center in Freiberg and was able to prevent socialist housing planning in the city center by enforcing the inclusion of the old town and mining facilities in the district and central monuments list of the GDR. From 1983 to 1990 he worked at the district art center in Karl-Marx-Stadt , where he was responsible for the district's technical museums. At the same time he was a member of the Freiberg district council and a member of the central committee for the preservation of monuments at the GDR Cultural Association .

Douffet, from 1982 a member of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany , was elected to the first free people's chamber in the GDR in the Volkskammer election on March 18, 1990 . On September 30, 1990, he was elected the successor candidate by the People's Chamber in the election of 63 CDU members for the all-German Bundestag .

From 1991 to 1999, until his retirement, he was Head of Department for Museums and Monument Preservation at the Saxon State Ministry for Science and Art . From 1994 to 2014 Douffet was a member of the Freiberg City Council , temporarily as chairman of the CDU parliamentary group, and was extensively committed to the preservation of Freudenstein Castle .

Honors

Douffet's honors in the GDR include the city's silver medal (1982) and the Karl-Marx-Stadt district's architecture prize (1986). In 2004 the city of Freiberg awarded him the Andreas Möller History Prize and in 2005 the Citizen Prize. Douffet was an honorary member of the Freiberg Antiquity Association . On May 4, 2017 - two days after his death - he was posthumously made an honorary citizen of the city of Freiberg.
