The Vanajavesi is a lake in southwest Finland in the landscapes of Pirkanmaa , Kanta-Häme and Päijät-Häme .
The lake has an area of 149.8 km² and is at an altitude of 79.4 m. The largest town near the Vanajavesi lake shore is Hämeenlinna . Other cities in the immediate vicinity are Valkeakoski and Urjala .
The northeastern chain of lakes, consisting of Längelmävesi , Vesijärvi , Roine , Pälkänevesi and Mallasvesi , flows into the Vanajavesi at Valkeakoski.
To the southeast is another chain of lakes consisting of Lummene , Vehkajärvi , Vesijako , Kuohijärvi , Kukkia , Iso-Roine , Hauhonselkä and Ilmoilanselkä , which drains into the aforementioned Mallasvesi lake.
Another chain of lakes and rivers flows from the south, originating from Pääjärvi in the east and Loppijärvi in the west, to the Vanajavesi.
In the southwest there are other lakes, including the Rutajärvi , which feed the Vanajavesi.
The water of the Vanajavesi flows over the Kuokkalankoski rapids to the northwest and flows into Lake Pyhäjärvi at Lempäälä . Thus the Vanajavesi lies in the catchment area of the Kokemäenjoki .
National landscape
The Vanajavesi and its surroundings form the center of the historical province of Häme . The Finnish Ministry of the Environment declared this area one of the “national landscapes” of Finland in the 1990s.
