Toijala [ ˈtɔi̯jɑlɑ ] is a formerly independent town in the Pirkanmaa region in western Finland . Since 2007 it belongs to the city of Akaa .

Location and history

Toijala is located on the shores of Lake Vanajavesi in the south of the Pirkanmaa landscape. The place is next to Viiala and Kylmäkoski one of three settlement centers (taajama) of Akaa and seat of the city administration. Toijala was already in the Middle Ages, the church village of the parish Akaa. In 1946 the municipality of Akaa was dissolved and Toijala was raised to an independent market town (kauppala) . The rest of the municipal area was divided between the municipalities of Viiala , Kylmäkoski and Sääksmäki . In 1977 Toijala received city rights. In 2007 Toijala merged with the municipality of Viiala to form the city of Akaa.

The city of Toijala had an area of ​​58.5 square kilometers (of which 7.5 square kilometers inland water) and in 2006 had 8,419 inhabitants. The city is Finnish speaking .

The railway lines Helsinki - Tampere and Turku - Tampere cross at Toijala station . The State Road 3 from Helsinki via Tampere to Vaasa leads Toijala past and, as in this stretch motorway expanded.

economy

Toijala is home to the largest factory for mämmi , a Finnish dish eaten at Easter. In 2005, the Mämmi eating competition was held in Toijala .

Attractions

The wooden church from 1817, a medieval sacristy , which was built around 1510 as the first construction phase of a planned but unfinished stone church , as well as a railway and wallpaper museum are worth seeing .
