Wintergatan (Swedish: Vintergatan , German: Milky Way ) is a Swedish Folktronica - band from Gothenburg with a focus on instrumental music . The band sometimes uses unusual musical instruments, such as B. a theremin , a singing saw , a self-invented electronic "Modulin", self-made punched tape - music boxes , a typewriter for percussion and other mechanical musical instruments .

Wintergatan was founded by Martin Molin after the band Detektivbyrån broke up. Molin was born on January 24, 1983 in Karlstad . Other band members of Wintergatan are Evelina Hägglund, Marcus Sjöberg and David Zandén. The first single Sommarfågel was released in autumn 2012, the debut album Wintergatan followed in spring 2013.

Marble Machine

The band became internationally known with the release of the music video Marble Machine in 2016, which has already been viewed over 145 million times (as of July 22, 2020). Martin Molin plays a self-composed song on a self-made musical instrument that resembles a large marble run and at the same time contains technical elements of a barrel organ and music box .

The device, which is driven by a hand crank , transports over 2000 steel marbles upwards via a sophisticated transport system. From there, the marbles fall specifically onto several built-in musical instruments, are caught and added to the transport cycle. The sequence of sounds is controlled by two “programming wheels”, similar to a drum music box , with pens on a rotating cylinder triggering mechanical sounds. With the Marble Machine, on the other hand, individual marbles are specifically released in the event of the respective instrument. A vibraphone , a bass guitar and a cymbal are integrated in the music machine . About pickups also be drum sounds from a bass drum , hi-hat and snare drum produced. The individual instruments can be manually switched on or muted during operation using several large levers. The strings of the bass guitar can be pressed by hand to change the pitch. The marbles for the vibraphone can also be triggered individually by hand to a limited extent when the device is at a standstill.

The Marble Machine was built by hand without exact planning in advance, and accordingly many improvised places. The band documented the production on YouTube from December 2014 to March 2016. Ten months after the music video was released, the device was dismantled, taken to the Netherlands and rebuilt for an exhibition at the Speelklok Museum in Utrecht . Due to the instability, however, it is only functional to a limited extent.

Martin Molin has been working on a successor model since January 2017, the Marble Machine X (MMX) , which was technically much more complex and will therefore be more stable and robust. The band plans to go on a world tour with the MMX. The production process is also documented in detail on YouTube with over 100 episodes. The individual videos received several hundred thousand views within a very short time.

Marble Machine Cover Versions

Since the Marble Machine video was released on March 1, 2016, there are numerous new cover versions of the piece by other musicians on YouTube. There are now well over a hundred versions and the number is constantly increasing. There are many experimental variations, but there are also classic adaptations. Numerous examples are summarized on a separate YouTube page and often commented on by Martin Molin.

Live performances by the band

With the album of the same name, Wintergatan , the band played eight concerts between May and October 2013 in various cities in their homeland, Sweden , as well as two concerts in Norway (including Oslo ) and one in Copenhagen in Denmark . In addition to three other concerts in Sweden, they performed in Germany at the Haldern Pop Festival in August 2016 . Her last concert so far took place in March 2017 at the Victoria Theater in Malmö .
