Its name means river in German and the designers specifically studied the movement and the effects it has on the natural environment.

The car was designed by Laurens van den Acker , Mazda's world design director, and a team led by Franz von Holzhausen , Director of Design for Mazda North American Operations' (MNAO) in Irvine, California .

Franz von Holzhausen said: “The Nagare celebrates proportions and a surface language that will be reproduced in future design studies for presentation at other international automobile exhibitions. The Nagare explores light and shadow and develops the design details for the next generation of Mazda automobiles. We are looking pretty far ahead with the Nagare. We want to show what the Mazda design will look like in 2020. In doing so, we have redefined the basic proportions, as well as the idea of driving without losing the aspect of feeling. The spirit of Mazda driving is expanded and intensified by the Nagare. "

According to its chief designer, the Mazda Nagare celebrates proportions and a surface language: "Its body lines flow like liquid through its soft, frameless design and there are no distinguishing features that detract from the overall theme of the car. It has a large windshield that opens at a very shallow angle The car's glass roof goes over. Its large, aggressive wheels are literally wrapped in the wheel arches and integrated as part of the body. "

"Two double-long doors are hinged at the front and spread out from the driver's cab like the wings of a butterfly. Inside you can see the driver's seat installed in the middle of the front part of the interior and three passenger seats are arranged around it at the back. The interior is seated the organic themes continue with futuristic elliptical instruments and controls and provide information to the driver. "

Details of the drive can currently only be guessed at. Mazda did not provide any information about the engine specification or performance because they wanted to focus on the design elements of the car. Some people believe the Nagare could be equipped with Mazda's future hydrogen-powered rotary engine .
