Laurens van den Acker (born September 5, 1965 ) is a Dutch automobile designer and has been chief designer at Renault since 2009 , after having been chief designer at Mazda since 2006 .

His basic statement for the new design line, which he gave his approximately 500 employees at Renault-Design, was, according to him, the Renault DeZir 1 concept vehicle . The same team that developed the DeZir carried out the renovation of the Renault Clio small car . The renewal of the small car segment was completed with the Renault Captur crossover and the Twingo microcar . It was followed by the MPV Renault Espace and then the development of a new entry-level cars for third world countries, in India brought out Renault Kwid .

Career

Van den Acker studied at the Technical University of Delft in the Dutch province of South Holland at the Faculty of Industrial Design , where he obtained a master's degree in construction. His professional career began in Italy in 1990 at Design System srl in Turin . In 1993 he moved to Audi as an exterior designer at its Ingolstadt Design Center in Germany. In 1996 he started as a Senior Designer at SHR Perceptual Management in Newbury Park ( USA ). 1998 was recruited by Ford Motor, USA as Chief Designer of their Brand Imaging Group in Irvine , California . In 2003 he became chief designer for the Ford Escape Platform at the Dearborn Design Center in Michigan (USA). In 2005 he became chief designer of Ford’s Strategic Design. In 2006 he became General Manager of Mazda Design in Hiroshima , Japan, where he worked on the renewal of the company's corporate design. Since May 15, 2009, he has been succeeding Patrick le Quément as chief designer at Renault and has been a senior vice-president for Cooperate Design since January 2015.
