Renault Kwid Concept Car

The Renault Kwid is a very cost-effective five-seater mini SUV , which since September 2015, Automotive Renault Nissan India in Indian Chennai manufactures and for less than 4,000 euros (257,000 to 353,000 rupees is sold). The vehicle with a base price of around 3,500 euros is initially only designed for the Indian market and is not available in Europe.

The Kwid is the first car based on the new CMF-A platform. Renault-Nissan also uses them for the Datsun redi-GO introduced in 2016 . The "Common Module Family" (CMF) was developed jointly by Renault and Nissan and is a modular system for vehicles, CMF-A is the version for small cars, the A segment.

The chief developer of the Renault Kwid was Gérard Detourbet ; he was also responsible for setting up production and selecting suppliers.

The vehicle

The Kwid is a crossover style car, 3.68 meters long, 1.58 meters wide and 1.48 meters high. This makes it a little longer, but narrower than the Twingo . The sitting position is raised. On May 20, 2015, it was presented to the public by Renault's managing director Carlos Ghosn . Sales began in September 2015. Within the first two weeks, 25,000 orders were received.

When it was launched in India, there was only a three-cylinder gasoline engine with 0.8 liter displacement, four valves per cylinder and 40 kW (54 hp) at 5678 rpm. It delivered the maximum torque of 72 Nm at 4400 rpm. The fully synchronized transmission has five forward gears and one reverse gear, which can be selected via a gear stick between the front seats. The front wheels are individually suspended on MacPherson struts and wishbones , and a torsion beam axle with coil springs is installed at the rear . In the better equipped versions, the steering has electric power assistance, the brakes have discs at the front and drums at the rear . The wheels are fastened with 3 wheel bolts per wheel.

safety

In May 2016, Global NCAP published the results of crash tests in which the Renault Kwid was tested in three variants, including one with airbags , and rated 0 (out of 5) stars for occupant protection for adults in all versions. Another test by ASEAN NCAP in June 2018 came to the same result. The model produced in Brazil, on the other hand, achieved 3 stars in both test areas when tested by Latin NCAP in November 2017 .

Market, competition and concept

Renault competes with the newly designed and developed vehicle in India against the Maruti Alto and the Hyundai Eon .

concept

Around 30 percent of new registrations in India are in the entry-level segment of small cars. Renault sees the task in this market segment as follows, according to its chief designer Laurens van den Acker : “In India there are currently only 14 cars for every 1,000 inhabitants, so a car has to be really cheap. But a cheap car shouldn't look poor. Otherwise it will be unsuccessful. ” Initial considerations to recycle parts from the production of Renault's Romanian low-cost brand Dacia for the production of the Kwid were given up. The parts from models like Duster , Sandero and Lodgy were too expensive for the Indian market. As a result, 98 percent of the parts of the Kwid are produced locally in India, of which 60 percent in the greater Chennai area.

Costs and refinancing of the project

Chief developer Gérard Detourbet told Forbes that the total cost of the Kwid project was only around 400 million euros. This sum includes the development of the CMF-A platform for the entry segment, which would also be used in the future for an even smaller model at Nissan-Datsun, the Datsun redi-GO , as well as the development of the KWID with a completely new engine and new gearbox and more also the Indian factory with a production capacity of 300,000 cars per year. Production in India alone is enough to refinance the EUR 400 million project costs. And in 2017 there will be further production in Brazil.

export

Renault began exporting the Kwid, which was cheaply produced in India, to Sri Lanka , Nepal and Mauritius as early as 2016 and was planning to export it to Bhutan , Bangladesh and South Africa for 2017 .

Production in Brazil

In order to meet the considerably stricter legal requirements for accident safety there, each of the vehicles of this model manufactured in Brazil since 2017 is almost identical in size (3,679 m long, 1,579 m wide and 1,513 m high) and has an additional weight of 140 kg of steel . The standard equipment in Brazil also includes 4 airbags , an anti-lock braking system and Isofix attachments for child seats.
