The Renault Magnum , introduced under the name Renault AE Magnum (the AE was later dropped), is a truck series produced by the French manufacturer Renault Trucks from 1990 to 2013 . The model series appeared in 1990 as the heaviest truck series from the French manufacturer. It was the successor to the R series , which was offered in parallel until the appearance of the lighter Premium model in 1996. The successor model was the T-Truck, which was first presented in Lyon on June 11, 2013 .

Model history

The Renault Magnum pursued a completely new concept in European truck construction. The driver's cab was completely separated from the engine compartment and was given a level floor, into which no engine tunnel protruded. The separation also significantly reduced the noise and vibration for the occupants. The driver's cab was also visually clearly separated from the rest of the vehicle. The semi-trailers were fitted with chassis cladding as standard , which was optionally available from other manufacturers. It was also unusual that the ascent to the building, which was very tall for the time, took place behind the front axle and not in front of it, as is usually the case. The Magnum also received electric blinds on the windows ex works . Due to its extreme cuboid shape and the high window, the vehicle looked and still seems very massive.

The Italian car designer Marcello Gandini was responsible for the design, who had made a name for himself with numerous unusual car designs such as the Lamborghini models Miura and Countach , but also the Lancia Stratos , which he either worked for the Carrozzeria Bertone or as freelance designer responsible.

The engine originally started at 287 kW. In the meantime the power levels were 294, 324 and 353 kW; later only 338 and 368 kW were available. The last three power levels with 323, 353 and 382 kW were in the range. The engine series DXi13 came from Volvo; this shared the Magnum with the contemporary version of the Volvo FH from today's parent company of Renault Trucks, Volvo Trucks . All engines were in-line six cylinder - diesel engines ; the last displacement was 12.8 l.

The engine output in hp was part of the type designation of the vehicles and was emblazoned on small signs on the doors. At the time, the Williams Grand Prix team used Magnum tractors to transport their Formula 1 racing cars, which were equipped with Renault Sport engines. These tractors had door plates with the indication "750" (550 kW).

The overall concept of the vehicle remained unique on the market; In the years that followed, however, other manufacturers also offered enlarged and raised cabs, some with comparable or even greater headroom and level floors.

In 1991 the then Renault AE was voted Truck of the Year . In 1998 the name AE was dropped, and since then the model has only been called Renault Magnum. Major model updates and facelifts took place in 1998, 2002 and 2010, with the interior of the driver's cab also being completely redesigned.

The vehicles were fitted with a 16-speed manual transmission from ZF as standard ; an automatic transmission was available as an option. The Renault Magnum was particularly popular in its home country of France and on the Iberian Peninsula .
