The Renault 6 - R6 for short - is a Renault car model that was built between the summer of 1968 and the end of 1986.

history

The Renault 6 was launched in October 1968. It was designed as a slightly larger addition to the Renault 4 . The appearance of the R6, which was based on the Renault 16 , was aimed primarily at young families. It was built in different versions over the years, which differed mainly at the bow. The headlights of the first version were round and had an aluminum frame. The grille was chrome-plated.

The chassis (platform frame) and the running gear with double wishbones at the front and longitudinal swing arms at the rear, torsion bar springs, rack and pinion steering and drum brakes were the same as those of the R4, but the R6 was also available with larger engines and disc brakes at the front.

In August 1973, square headlights, larger rear lights and a radiator grille without chrome elements and different license plate lights were introduced.

From summer 1973 to mid-1984 the 4x4 Sinpar version was built with all-wheel drive.

In April 1980, production of the Renault 6 in France ended. The Renault 14 , built since May 1976, took over the place in the compact class , even if this is not classified as a direct successor to the R6 and below that the 5-door version of the Renault 5 introduced in 1979 was intended.

In South America, the vehicle has long been one of the most popular car models. The R6 continued to roll off the assembly line there until mid-1984. In Spain, the Renault 6 was built by FASA-Renault , Renault's Spanish subsidiary in Valladolid . Production there was only stopped at the end of 1986 after around 328,000 vehicles had been built.

Engine variants

Technically, there were three basic variants of the R6:

Renault 6 GTL (1978–1986)

The first variant R6 L (factory code R1180) was equipped with a displacement of 845 cm³ and achieved 25 kW (34 PS).

The R6 TL (R1181) was produced from autumn 1969 to summer 1978 and developed 33 kW (45 hp) with a displacement of 1108 cm³. Another variant with 35 kW (47 hp) followed in autumn 1970.

The most powerful version from the summer of 1978 was the R6 GTL with 1397 cm³ and 44 kW (60 PS), with further modernizations both improving performance and reducing fuel consumption.
