Renault Espace III (Type JE) is the name of the third generation of the Espace MPV from Renault .
Model history
Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test |
The third generation (internally called type JE ), which was offered from November 1996, was developed and assembled by Matra like its predecessors and, like its predecessors, had a plastic body on a galvanized steel chassis.
The JE received newly developed four-cylinder engines that were installed transversely for the first time. There were gasoline engines from 2.0 liters with 84 kW (114 hp) to 3.0 liters with 140 kW (190 hp). The V6 petrol engine from the J63 type (with 12 valves) was still produced in a performance-enhanced version of 123 kW (167 hp) until 1998 and then by a newly developed V6 with 3.0 l displacement, 24 valves and 140 kW (190 PS) replaced. At the same time, the CAN bus system was also introduced in Espace. The diesel engines were also modernized during the course of production; the engines ranged from 1.9 liters with 72 kW (98 hp) to 2.2 liters with 95 kW (129 hp).
At the 1997 IAA , the Grand Espace , which was 27 centimeters longer and was the first van ever to receive four Euro NCAP stars for exemplary safety, was offered in addition to the basic model . A total of 357,120 vehicles of this generation were manufactured up to September 2002. The JE Grand Espace has the largest interior space of all Espace, but it also has the largest external dimensions.
Facelift
A facelift was carried out for the factory holidays in summer 2000 , externally recognizable by the clear glass headlights.
In addition, changes were made to the model names: if the RT, RXE, Elyssee and Initiale versions were still available up to that point, the sales prospectus from September 2000 contained the names Authentique, Expression, Privilege and Initiale. The diesel engine has also been redesigned: the pre-chamber diesel with 83 kW (113 hp) became two common rail diesel engines with 85 kW (115 hp) and 95 kW (129 hp).
The two-liter gasoline engine with eight valves and 84 kW (114 hp) was taken out of the range shortly after the revision, which means that the 16V engine (type: F4R) was now the standard engine and until it was discontinued in October 2002 together with the 2nd 2 dCi and the 3.0 V6 24V was produced.
Sister models
In autumn 2001, a four-seater coupé with a plastic body based on the JE type was presented, the Renault Avantime . Its production was stopped after 18 months as a result of Matra's bankruptcy in spring 2003.
