Carlos Ghosn (2008)

Carlos Ghosn KBE ( Arabic كارلوس غصن, DMG Kārlūs Ġuṣn , born March 9, 1954 in Porto Velho , Brazil ) is a manager with Brazilian , Lebanese and French citizenship. Ghosn was Chief Executive Officer of Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Renault until January 23, 2019. The Japanese criminal authorities arrested him in November 2018 and sued him. a. of infidelity. After he was released on bail from custody, he evaded the access of the Japanese judiciary by fleeing to Lebanon in late December 2019.

Life

As a child of a Christian-Lebanese family, Ghosn moved with his mother and siblings from his native Brazil to Lebanon at the age of six, where he attended a French school. After studying engineering at the École polytechnique in Paris, he started at Michelin in 1978 , where he became head of Michelin North America in 1990.

In 1996 the ailing car manufacturer Renault hired him as Executive Vice President. Ghosn took drastic restructuring measures; In 1997 Renault was back in the black. In 1999, Renault sent him to the Japanese car company Nissan with the job of "Sichten und Sanieren" . Renault had previously acquired a 44.4% stake in Nissan under the leadership of Louis Schweitzer . This was possible because Nissan was in an existence-threatening crisis at the time. Plant closings, improvements in many processes and the reorganization of the supply chain led to the restructuring of Nissan.

Ghosn was CEO of Nissan since 2001. From 2005 he was also CEO of Renault as the successor to Louis Schweitzer. In 2006 Ghosn held talks about an alliance with General Motors at the suggestion of General Motors shareholder Kirk Kerkorian , which initially ended with no results. Effective December 14, 2016, Ghosn also became Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mitsubishi Motors , in which Nissan has held a 34% stake since 2016. In April 2017, Ghosn moved from the board position to the board of directors at Nissan to focus on the business of Mitsubishi and Renault.

Private life

Ghosn was married to the Lebanese Rita Ghosn from 1984 to 2010 and has four children. In May 2016 he married the American Carole Nahas, who was born in Beirut.

Criminal Investigation in Japan

Ghosn was arrested in Japan on November 19, 2018; Japanese authorities also searched Nissan's house at the same time. The Japanese public prosecutor's office accused him, among other misconduct, of embezzling company funds: Ghosn had set his own income too low in annual financial statements and thus violated financial market regulations. He is also said to have embezzled company assets for private purposes in order to finance luxury apartments in four countries, and to have committed other misconduct. As CEO, Ghosn also transferred US $ 15 million to the Omani car dealer Suhail Bahwan Automobiles (SBA) for marketing costs, of which $ 5 million is said to have flowed back to Ghosn's private account. On another occasion, Nissan paid Ghosn's money to a Saudi businessman who had previously supported him financially.

Ghosn denies the allegations made against him; all disbursements were duly discussed with the relevant department and it was not his intention to incorrectly declare income; his overthrow was orchestrated by a handful of nationalist Nissan executives and senior officials from the Japanese Ministry of Industry, with the help of Tokyo prosecutors, to oppose a gradual takeover of Nissan by Renault; these were based on internal information that Nissan had leaked to them in an illegal manner.

Ghosn was released from his post shortly after his arrest by Nissan. On November 26, 2018, Ghosn was also deposed as head of the board of directors of Mitsubishi Motors. Renault, on the other hand, stated in December that no wrongdoing could be found. Nonetheless, Ghosn resigned from his position as President of Renault on January 24, 2019.

At the end of April 2019, he was released from pretrial detention under strict conditions on bail totaling 1.5 billion yen (around 12 million euros); for example, he was not allowed to leave the country. Nevertheless, under circumstances that were not yet fully clarified, he fled to Lebanon at the end of December 2019. There is no extradition agreement between Japan and Lebanon; even France, which on principle does not extradite its nationals, would not extradite him to Japan. An Interpol arrest warrant for Ghosn was received in Lebanon at the beginning of January 2020 . The Lebanese government has not yet made a decision, but has indicated that extradition is unlikely.
