Georg Blume (* 1963 in Hanover ) is a German journalist , East Asia expert and long-time foreign correspondent .

Life

Initially trained as a carpenter, he did his community service in a Jewish children's home and a center for peace research in Paris . Remaining in France , he became a correspondent for the taz in 1985 . In 1990 he moved to Tokyo (Japan) with his wife Chikako Yamamoto and reported together with her for the taz and the Swiss World Week from East Asia, from 1992 also for Die Zeit . Since Zeit and the taz opened a joint office in Beijing , Blume has been accredited as a correspondent in China . From 2009 to 2013, Blume reported as a correspondent from Delhi and since then again from Paris.

In 2007 he received the Liberty Award in Berlin for his committed, critical reporting, which also tried to arouse understanding for the culturally independent approach of other countries on the way to more democracy and freedom. "As long as we do not explain to the public what is going on here, we will continue to stick with some controversial images of China," he said in 2008. Blume conveyed insights into the "Chinese inner view", into the changing thinking of the population, and implemented this Relation to the official image of the CPC .

China Reporter Project

In 2019, the Chinese Embassy in Berlin pushed a project aimed at influencing German reporting on China . Blume and the journalist Wolfgang Hirn had designed the “Chinareporter” project, which was to have an annual budget of 250,000 euros. Among other things, three permanent and three freelance workers should be paid, who should report positively about the PRC . The Chinese ambassador Shi Mingde wrote to German DAX companies in February 2019 to raise money for the project.
