With the exception of the Wankel engine, the RX-4, which was available as a two-door hardtop coupé, a four-door sedan and a five-door station wagon, corresponded to the first-generation Mazda 929 . In technical terms, apart from the engine, the RX-4 was conventional (rigid rear axle, rear drum brakes ).

The RX-4 was powered by a two-disc rotary engine with a chamber volume of initially 1200, later (from 1975) 1300 cm³ (93 kW / 127 PS).

In 1976 the RX-4 underwent a facelift with a slightly simpler and smoother front section.

In Germany, the RX-4, unlike its counterpart 929 with a conventional reciprocating engine, was not offered.
