Districts of Republican Subordination ( Tajik Ноҳияҳои тобеи ҷумҳурӣ ; Russian Районы республиканского подчинения , Rajony respublikanskogo podtschinenija; translates as "the Republic of subordinate districts") is the collective term for a group of districts ( Rajon , Tajik nohija ) in Tajikistan that are managed directly by the central government . The area corresponds roughly to the historical region of Karotegin (Russian Karategin ), which occupies the central part of the country.
The area is around 28,600 km² and has 1,874,000 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 66 inhabitants per km² (as of 2014). The higher-level administration of the districts is located in Dushanbe , which at the same time forms the capital district of Tajikistan and is not itself counted among the Nohijahoi tobei dschumhurij.
The region is bordered by the Sughd Province to the north, the Chatlon Province to the southwest and the Berg-Badakhshan Autonomous Province to the east .
