The province of Chatlon was initially created in September 1988 through the merger of the two oblasts of Qurghonteppa and Kulob (Kuljab), which had existed since 1973 , but was divided again from 1990 to November 1992.
The population is mainly active in agriculture - especially on cotton plantations and in cattle breeding .
The provincial capital is Qurghonteppa (Tajik Қурғонтеппа /گرگان تپه), formerly known as Kurgan-Tjube ( Russian Курган-Тюбе ). Other larger cities are Kulob ( Кӯлоб /کولاب) and Norak ( Норак /نارک), larger settlements are Jowon ( Ёвон ) and Danghara ( Данғара /دنغره).
Administratively, the province of Chatlon is divided into 24 districts (Nohija) and the four district-free cities Qurghonteppa, Kulob, Norak and Sarband , which, apart from Qurghonteppa itself, are the administrative seat of a district of the same name, to which they do not belong.
