Vakhsh ( Tajik Вахш ) is a settlement ( Shahrak, шаҳрак ) in the valley of the river Vakhsh in the Tajik province of Khatlon . In 2014 it had about 13,800 inhabitants.
geography
The nearest major city is the provincial capital Qurghonteppa about 15 km north. The settlement of Kolkhozobod is about 20 km to the southwest . To Sarband (until 1996 Kalininobod ) in the north-northeast it is also 20 km. From the city of Wachsch to the river of the same name, the distance to both west and north (near Sarband) is around 20 km.
Wachsch is the administrative seat of the district of the same name (nohija) Wachsch .
history
The place received the status of an urban-type settlement in 1937 under the name Wachschstroi ( Russian Вахшстрой ), about "Wachsch-Bau", in relation to the system of irrigation canals in the area, starting from a reservoir on the Wachsch near Sarband. The administration of the system was located in the settlement. In the second half of the 1960s, the name was shortened to its current form.
