Course of Wachsch, Surchob and Kysylsuu in Tajikistan |
Wachsch ( Tajik Вахш orوخش; also Vachs , Vakhsh or Vachsch ) is a 375 km long right or northern source river of Amu Darya in Tajikistan in Central Asia .
River course
The Wachsch arises at the confluence of the Surchob and Obichingou rivers south of the Alai Mountains in northern Tajikistan and flows from there in a south-westerly direction. The water flows through the Rogun Dam , the Nurek Dam and the two dams Sangtuda-1 and Sangtuda-2 . On the border of Tajikistan and Afghanistan, the Wachsch unites with the Punj to form the Amu Darya , but without touching the Afghan river bank opposite at the point of union. The Tigrowaya Balka Nature Reserve and the Oxus treasure site are also located in this area .
The towns of Norak (Nurek), Qurghonteppa (Kurgan-Tjube), Wachsch and Kolkhozobod are located on the bank or not far from the river .
Dams
The Wachsch flows through the two highest dams on earth and other dams; downstream these are:
