The Tigrowaya Balka Nature Reserve is located in Tajikistan on the banks of the Wachsch River on the border with Afghanistan . It extends over 40 km from the southwest to the northeast.

The highest peaks of the reserve reach about 1,200 m above sea level. The climate is continental and dry. The different habitats include semi-deserts, savanna-like grass areas with pistachio trees and lush Tugai vegetation of poplars, olive willows and tall grasses in the lowland .

The area was one of the last refuges of the extinct Caspian tiger , whose traces were last recorded in the reserve in 1953. Today it is at least home to its main prey, the Bukhara deer (according to different estimates, 130 to 270 specimens, as of 2011). In addition, come striped hyenas , jackals, jungle cats , wild boar, gazelle , porcupine and the introduced coypu ago. Wolves, red foxes and in the hilly areas of Urial are also mammals in the reserve.
