Jowon ( Tajik : Ёвон) is a city and a jamoat in the Tajik province of Chatlon . According to an estimate from 2019, 36,100 people live in the city. Jowon is also the administrative seat of the district of the same name ( Nohija ).

location

Jowon is located in western Tajikistan in the province of Chatlon at an altitude of 655 meters. The Tajik capital Dushanbe is located about 30 kilometers northwest of Jowon. The provincial capital Qurghonteppa is located southwest of Jowon.

The climate in Jowon is subject to large seasonal fluctuations. In the winter months the average temperatures are above 0 degrees Celsius , the coldest month is January with an average of 1.7 ° C. Infrastructure and economy

Jowon is connected to the national trunk road network, a trunk road leads via Jowon to the capital Dushanbe.

Water supply

Due to the low rainfall in the summer months, the water supply is a major problem for the city and the local agriculture. Aid organizations are active in the city to improve the water supply. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) also supports the population of Jowon by providing materials for drip irrigation , which are intended to increase the efficiency of agriculture.

Nepheline

Another industry for the city could be the extraction of aluminum from nepheline , which is available in the region. To this end, the Tajik aluminum company TALCO and a Chinese chemical company are planning to build a large-scale nepheline processing plant in the Jowon area.
