Nohija

Nohija ( Tajik ноҳия , plural: ноҳияҳо nohijaho ) denotes an administrative unit in Tajikistan . It is the second highest administrative unit in Tajikistan after the province (vilojat). Nohija are in turn divided into communes ( jamoat ). The Tajik Nohijas emerged from the Rajons introduced during Soviet rule .

In Tajikistan there are a total of 58 Nohijas and four capital districts in Dushanbe . 14 Nohijas are in Sughd Province . 13 to the districts subordinate to the republic , which are administered directly by the central government from Dushanbe, 24 to the Khatlon province and seven to the autonomous province of Berg-Badakhshan .

The administrative division of the country into provinces (vilojat), districts (Nohija) and municipalities (Jamoat) formally serves to divide competences. In reality, however, there is strong centralism in Tajikistan .
