The Freiburg Municipal Cinema is a non-commercial cinema in Freiburg im Breisgau . It was founded in 1972.

history

The initiative to found a municipal cinema in Freiburg came from the Social Work Group of the Freiburg Young Socialists . On November 23, 1972, the communal cinema working group was finally founded in the Feierling restaurant . The first public film screening took place on January 8, 1973 in the rooms of Gewerbeschule II on Friedrichring.

In 1981 the municipal cinema moved together with the Free Artists' Group Freiburg (fkf) to the old Wiehre station of the Höllentalbahn . In addition to the offices of the cinema and the cinema, the building also houses a gallery room. In 1981 the café was set up in the old Wiehrebahnhof . After the dissolution of the fkf , the Literatur Forum Südwest moved into the Alte Wiehrebahnhof in 2003 . In 2017 it moved to the Literaturhaus in the Alte Uni.

At times the municipal cinema published its own film magazine , Journal Film .

»Show other films differently« - the program of the Freiburg municipal cinema is well described with this motto of municipal film work. In addition to film classics and current new productions, the program is characterized by many collaborations with other associations and institutions. Film historical and analytical lectures and introductions complete the film program. There are regular program slots for experimental films ( kino avantgarde ), silent films with live accompaniment, children's cinema and French cinema. A special focus is the Wednesday cinema, which presents ethnographic films from Trikont and / or with a migration background.

The municipal cinema is a venue for the Cine Latino and the Brazil Plural Festival and has been holding a renowned festival of ethnographic film every two years since 1985 with the Freiburg Film Forum .

The cinema has already been awarded the Cinema Prize of the Kinematheksverbund six times for its program , most recently in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010.
