Since 1985, the municipal cinema in Freiburg has organized the Freiburg film forum , which has developed into one of the most important festivals for intercultural dialogue in Europe.

The forum has set itself the task of enabling a different view of foreign cultures in order to do justice to their intrinsic value and complexity. The film week in Freiburg , which takes place every two years, thrives on the encounter between the audience and the film guests. The Filmforum has repeatedly invited filmmakers from numerous countries and different cultures to present their current documentaries and feature films and to discuss them with the audience. The guests in Freiburg included: Ian Dunlop, Robert Gardner, John Marshall, Mani Kaul , Timothy and Patsy Asch, Melissa Llewelyn-Davies, Luc de Heusch, Dennis O'Rourke, Rahul Roy, Judith and David MacDougall, Pierre Haffner and Jean-Paul Colleyn. The film program is accompanied by panel discussions, an exhibition and readings. The event takes place in May of every odd year.
